Socially Inappropriate Slides

Hi All,

I want to release my frustrations with NTs here. I hope you guys don't mind or

get mad at me. It's better here than on other places where there are NTs and

they get mad at me and put me down.

As usual, my lab instructor HATES me. She is the NT of NTs, wanting everyone to

do everything in a social, group fashion ( that way she gets the credit for

teaching us but no one actually ends up learning anything), not wanting anyone

to ask smart, real questions,etc.

It's making me nucking futs. AHHHHH!!!

Since I have this cold/virus, I wanted to see the bugs that were making me

miserable. I asked her last lab if I could cough on a slide and see what I had,

and she looked at me like I fell off of Mars when it got close to the earth.

Today's lab she STILL wouldn't let me do a spread plate of the bugs on back of

my throat, even if we did one on the stuff on our skin. She gave me the icky

look- so then I was asking to see a " socially inappropriate " slide.

(I come up with little names and anecdotes for NT reactions to me)

She thinks I'm trying to show off my smarts- doesn't she see that would be a bad

idea? I am the only one who shows any interest in the lab, so SHE HATES ME.

All she wants to do is get out early and party with her friends, and look for a

boyfriend. That's not what I paid for.

School is expensive for open university students, and she needs to respect me.

She has this attitude, then wonders why the NTs (the rest of the class) don't

give a damn about the class and fail her quizzes.

I sent her an email and the bitch never returned it. All her emails of class

notes are in Power Point- I don't have it and I'm not going to pay $150 just to

get it. I asked her what I can do about that.

This NT stuff is making me nuts. How can anyone live that way?? It is SO

dishonest, I can't think up all those lies on no sleep and while I'm trying to

learn. I find that I can't concentrate on class material or my interest and

smile. I just keep looking at people, concentrating on what I want to say, how

I can say it, and they give me this idiotic grin and I'm suppose to smile back.

Lately I've been forgetting all about it.

And my perservations scare and annoy people.

I have now become impassioned in my interest, feline health and nutrition. I

think about it and the microbial things related to it and I want to know more,

and I'm met with a brick wall from that bitch.

I have to curb my enthusiasm and act like an NT.

My lecture professor seems to want to help me, but he is slow. He still hasn't

returned the tests, nor my email from a couple of days ago. I know I have to be

patient, as he is very busy, and he told me the university is taking all his

time in meetings.

When I don't smile back at these stupid NTs they then hate me for life and I'm

an " asshole " . They would prefer that I deceive them and pull out a halfway

decent smile, even when I don't mean it, than focus on the topic at hand.

My lab teacher is so sensitive to this crap that it's ridiculous. I can see it

takes all she has to give me that fake smile, even though I've done nothing to

her.

The problem is, they get mad and judge and stay mad, no matter what. And acting

like this is so ass backwards, so illogical, senseless, and meaningless it's

very frustrating for me.

If anyone has feedback or can relate to this or my previous post, please let me

know. I'm trying to figure out a way to smooth things out with her, and calm

her down.

Jeanette,

Sounds like your instructor belongs in a mall, not a lab! Leave the

intelligent work to the likes of us. I'm with you - I'd like to see what

makes me tick/sick/ick.

Sound off all you like. That's what we're here for. If I wasn't so low

right now, I'd be sounding off, too.

http://www.openoffice.org

The presentation program in OpenOffice is supposed to be compatible with

PowerPoint, and OpenOffice is free. I would not buy any MS product

personally... Windows that came with the computer is as far as I would

go. MS is too powerful and has too much influence over the computer world.

Hi,

I can totally sympathise with you about the smiling thing.

I feel people are horrible to me because I dont smile; its even been pointed

out to me by someone at work once - 'you never smile'' like some accusation.

I do smile, it's just more likely to occur when I feel safe and am with

people I know and like.

I find life in the outside world very nerve-wracking with people often being

horrible for no real reason. I've tried smiling with some people land when

they dont return the smile it feels awful, so i developed a policy of only

smiling if they smiled first.

Expecting you to always be smiling on the off-chance that a person will

choose to smile back seems to be a very risky thing. I have done it and people

are

more likely to smile at you if you are already smiling but its such hard

work, feels totally unnatural and anyway I dont feel a lot of people are

deserving

of my nice-ness - to smile at them is like saying I think they're an OK

person when a lot of the time I can feel their nastiness oozing from every pore!

I think, for an easier life, if a colleague or lecturer smiles at you, it's

best to return the smile - it's encouraging that they're smiling at you first -

this indicates that they are giving you a certain level of acceptance

If someone smiles at me I always return it as it's only polite; its the

people who give funny looks I cant cope with; like they're expecting a different

expression to the one currently on my face - I find these people just tedious

and it makes me feel I cant be doing with people.

As for the slides I would have assumed that it would be potentially quite

dangerous to culture any form of cold virus, partly because it would be very

infections and partly because its mutations in cold viruses that cause pandemics

that can end up killing millions of people. The lecturer was being ignorant in

not giving an explanation though because the concept is an interesting one;

the fact she pulled a face doesnt say much for her really - I switch off

instantly from people who act like that - they're all 'overreaction and playing

to

the audience and very little interesting content' in my opinion.

Just tolerate her and smile back if she does. Ask her questions if they're

absolutely necessary for your course but i'd limit interaction with her to the

bare minimum as she sounds annoying and disrespectful - limit her

opportunities to be like this towards you.

i dont know if this applies where you are, but here, teachers have no choice in

coursework being based on groupwork. if it is done well, it is actually an

effective way of learning, even for as, however, mostly it is done very badly

and as you observed, nobody learns much at all.

as far as coughing on a slide is concerned, a teacher here would be disciplined

for permitting that. we have to encourage body fluids to stay in the body.

skin cells are different as they are not fluid, and they do not spread so far

and with such force. i guess if this was the case where you are, teacher would

have told you. i cannot imagine it being acceptable though, for safety reasons.

we are not allowed to examine blood, saliva, snot or any other body fluids in

the classroom or lab. maybe you should do medicine.

I tend to think that university instructors have more latitude in this

regard than teachers in high school, middle school, or elementary

school, but individual colleges or universities may put pressure on

instructors to do the group activities. I don't think that group

activities would be good for me in any form; I do not learn well when I

am stressed, and being in a group with others always makes me stressed.

I do not have the ability to feel like a part of a group; although I

have been dumped into groups with humans before, I have never actually

felt like one of a group, per se... even in groups of autistic adults,

it always feels like it is the group + me, not ever that I am a part of

the group. As such, I feel no responsibility or concern for the other

members; I know that their grade can depend upon my actions to a degree,

and mine on them, and I do not approve of this. My grade should reflect

my abilities and willingness to do the work, not anyone else's.

I am pretty testy with regard to being expected to do any work on my

time; if I elect to do assigned work (and I often did not when I was in

college), it will be in the time, place, and manner of my choosing, and

that will be that; if the group is expected to meet outside of class...

well, that would not be the manner of my choosing, and I would not do

it... and certainly I would not be willing to negotiate a meeting spot

outside of the classroom. I have typically taken failing grades in

classes rather than go outside of the parameters that I predefined for

what I will do and what I will not-- and nothing is more likely to bring

that out than putting me in a group.

I recall the last time I was in a class that required a group activity.

It was some sort of philosophy class, one that required persuasive

argument. I was put in a group, and the topic was " liberal media

bias. " I cannot remember exactly how it went, but some people were

" pro " and some were " con " on that topic.

The day that the project was announced, and when we broke into the

groups, was the last day I attended that class. It was well beyond the

two-week drop deadline, so I ceased going, and took the failing grade.

Had I stayed in college, I would have attempted to make up the class by

finding another instructor for the same class, one that did not require

group activity. If there was no other choice, I doubt I would have done

anything other than what I did. I do not do group activity, and that is

that-- this is not negotiable with me.

Let's see if I have this straight: its OK to breathe in or otherwise take

on other's germs, but its not OK to examine my own in a controlled

environment?!!

Yes! Isn't that stupid? Half the class had the darn cold, and NO you CAN'T

culture a virus. I was going to COUGH on a slide or just swab the back of my

throat, do a " live mount " observe the bacteria- name them and then disinfect

them. Hell, LOTS of persons were coughing.

And we CULTURED BACTERIA from our skin, not cells. We took sterile saline and

swabed our skin and did a spread plate. And she told us THAT could have

problems, which is stupid to me. She said some people's bacteria may not be

good for others, so we had to use our Student ID #, so others wouldn't know who

had what- how is that going to prevent others from " getting " another person's

bacteria? They are STANDING next to eachother, afterall. Then I asked her " So

how come we don't get sick from eachother? " she got mad and didn't answer me.

I think it's just stupid " liability " shit, and no one could possibly get sick

from anything, but someone could decide to sue about it if they wanted money.

So then I asked her if it was just for privacy, and she said yes. I'd better

keep my skin to myself- I guess.

Anyone who shows any interest in the natural world, or curiosity is dubbed a

loser and thwarted. And they wonder why graduation rates are way down and nobody

learns anything.

Yes, indeed, I was thinking the same thing. When I was writing how I

(badly) handled being forced into a group in a class when I was in

college, I was thinking that now I would do exactly what you wrote

above, playing the ADA card if necessary.

's post about being told to smile (that happened to me

a lot when I was younger; maybe people feel less free to do it

to old women, assuming we probably have reason not to smile!)

One thing it says (hmmmm. I hope I am remembering correctly

that this article is the source of what I'm about to say; I

know I read it somewhere recently) is that the mouths of

autistics tend to be lower at the outide ends than in the

middle. That's certainly true of me and probably explains

why people think I look sad (or even angry) when I'm not.

Maybe seeing an autistic mouth, which they mistake for an

unhappy mouth, evokes some kind of atavistic impulse in

NTs and forces them to demand a smile. (I'm joking....)

In the university where I work (in an office), there is oversight

of teaching. All instructors are required to be evaluated on a

regular basis. Another faculty member attends their class(es)

and reads their syllabi, etc. Also, there are " fads " (my term,

not theirs), such as group-learning, that become almost

mandatory. Such fads can be avoided, I think, only by limiting

one's teaching to certain types of courses. Making that choice

also limits one's career " profile, " though. It won't " win points "

with your colleagues or those in charge of making decisions

about your steps up the career rungs.

Personally, I am with you, . Only once did I participate

in one of those meeting-outside-class type groups. It took me

by surprise. I'd never heard of such a thing before. We met

only once. If I were still in school and facing more of those

groups, I would be in the Disabilities Office working on

getting an " out " due to autism.

Why is curiosity a bad thing? Tell it to (name your favourite

inventor/discoveror) ...
