Guest guest
I attended a presentation on RDI about six weeks ago. One local organization is in training right now, and plans to bring RDI to our area. I ordered a set of books (they're under $34 for the two on Amazon.com, and $47 on the connections center web site) with the exercises in them, and I LIKE THEM A LOT. We've been incorporating a lot of the non-verbal exercises into our home ABA program. We're moving more into Floortime next week, and by May or June, I may tap into the RDI stuff when the psychologist is up and running here. Why? Guest guest
--- As usual nothing is available here, can you recommend a book for me. My dd completely verbal, but could use a social skills program especially designed for ASD children, and none are available. Guest guest
My daughter is verbal, very expressive, but her receptive language is low. She has huge auditory processing difficulties. I like the ways RDI teaches the kids to read facial expressions through games and play. We're on really basic stuff right now, but a mom of an Aspergers teen son looked at the book on adolescents and saw some good exercises in it, too. We're just a long way off from that. Here are the books I ordered (except I got them from amazon, cheaper and w/ free shipping): http://www.connectionscenter.com/resources/default.asp Relationship Development Intervention with Children, Adolescents and Adults: Social and Emotional Development Activities for Asperger Syndrome, Autism Author: Gutstein, PhD and le K. Guest guest
> has anyone taken the parent courses or know anything about Steve > Gutstein or this social skills program of his for kids on the > spectrum? Hello, I am a professional who has worked in home programs for children with autism for 8 years, and I am pursuing certification in RDI because it is the first program I have found that really produces qualitative differences in the social interaction of the kids I work with. RDI is frequently described as a social skills program, but it is so much more than that. It basically addresses the core deficits of autism (teaches relative information processing, which we need to succeed in social interaction as well as most other aspects of life). People on the spectrum think in terms of black and white (absolute thinking) and this carries over into many domains (repetitive behaviors, rigid thinking, insistence on sameness, literal interpretation of language, etc.). I strongly recommend you download Dr. Gutstein's pilot study from his website at www.rdiconnect.com. If you have any questions you may email me at purplpeople@.... Take care, April Choulat (Tallahassee, FL) P.S. I recently attended a parent training and have to say it was extremely informative even as a professional. Parents are taught to tailor their child's programs; it was designed for parents who do not have access to RDI Providers, because it is so difficult to truly run an RDI Program without professional supervision (it's NOT just doing the activities in the book, it's a lifestyle...but a fun one!) This is not to say the activities will not be effective, but to get the full benefit of the program, other components are involved such as changing your style of communication. There are a lot of downloads on his site as well as parent message boards.
Guest guest
We went to one of his seminars, and really liked the concept. We bought his books and video tape. We have been doing RDI at home with our daughter (but not formally, and with no training). This improved her eye contact, and we really got her to use many more gestures - shaking her head no, nodding, gesturing " come here " . We dropped the ball on this recently because of the holidays - there was just so much to do! We are going to start doing it more formally with an organization here near us (Pittsburgh) soon.
