Hello all,

I am new here and I enclose a copy of the mail I sent to Ed. It is my experience with statins, within a very short time.

My name is and I live in the UK and am 57 years old/young:) I admit I have'nt been leading a very healthy life for a while but this is something I am sorting out in 2006:) About 4 years ago I had something very stressful happen in my life and looking after my health has not been a priority. I am now practicing Qigong and Tai Chi and my diet has improved 100%. The next bad thing for me to tackle is to stop smoking which I will do this week.

Regards,

Thank you for your welcome Ed.

I was prescribed Zocor/Simvastatin around 6 weeks ago and felt fine for the first 4/5 weeks, then one evening I had muscle pain in my back, around my ribcage, in my shoulders and down the front of my legs. I did'nt think a lot of it at first because I do have a type of inflamatory illness which affects my muscles and joint and I put it down to the start of a flare up. However, within a couple of hours the pain became so bad that I could'nt move and even breathing hurt so much. I sat in a chair all night unable to move. It was pain like I have never experienced before and as well as the general cramping pain I had stabbing pains in other parts. A few days previously I had experienced sudden stabbing pains in my kidney region but I thought I may have caught a chill, but I believe that this was the start of it. Eventually, with strong pain pills and hot water bottles I got the pain level down and was able to go to bed.

I did some research on Zocor the next day which frightened the **** out of me, so I stopped taking the Zocor and the pain settled. A few days later I decided to take Zocor again and the following day back came the pain. I did'nt take them for another few days and then cut one in half (all this time I thought that maybe it was my inflamatory illness which may be flaring....I was'nt sure) but again the pain came back, plus the area around my liver became painful and swollen. Now I am off them though I have yet to tell my doctor.

For the past 2 years I have been slowly reducing Seroxat (SSRI). I still can't get off the final 5mg and to be honest I feel like a chemical nightmare.

I hav'ent had any heart problems to my knowledge but my cholesterol level has always been high, 8.4 at the latest test (UK). I am overweight, which I am dealing with, and I am eating a very low fat diet now. In the past I have got my cholesterol level down by losing weight and eating oat bran muffins.

At the moment I am still not clear of all muscle pain and weakness, but I'm hoping it will improve.

I would like to know of any suppliments which do the same job as statins. From what I have read and experienced, anything would be better than statins! Seroxat was marketed in the same way and has proved to be a dangerous drug and I feel the same will happen with statins in the future. Thank good ness they are not addictive in the same way as Seroxat, or you may know it as Paxil.

I'm not sure if this mail will go to the group as I am new here, but I would like people to read it.

Kind Regards, (UK)

Has anyone here taken Pravachol? I am experiencing a lot of the

complications stated here by other statin takers but am taking

Pravachol. My Doctor's office called recently and wants to double my

dose from 40 to 80 mg. After reading all of the horror stories I am

afraid to take any at all.

Good for you Jack! Be very afraid! And be very brave

and tell your doctor of your complications and that

you are not going to take this poison anymore!

My problem was with Lipitor but a statin is a statin

no matter what name you call it.

Hello Jim:)

Thank you for the good luck wishes, it is not easy, is it? I have patches and an inhaler ready. I have tried to quit for some time but without success. I smoke 1 pack a day and don't inhale deeply but I think it's the phychological habit which is the strongest with me.

I am practicing Dr Lam's Qigong, and Tai Chi for arthritis. I hope to progress to the 24 forms later. I have'nt exercised for a while so I'm starting off gently:) The only advice I have is to practice every day until it becomes part of you, and concentrate on the breathing until it becomes natural:)

why continue altering brain chemistry if one can impact it in other ,

non medicated ways?????

yes, I took pravachol for about 4 months stopping over two years ago.

I have many of the symptoms described on this list. I am slowly

improving but still can't play golf. My pain is less but still requires

Vicoden to get through a busy day. My problems really increased when my

dose was increased. That was when I realized my problem was drug

related and not weakness from being 60 years old and having arthritis.

I started qigong and tai chi a short time ago but was prescribed Seroxat around 6 years ago for stress and anxiety, not depression. I am nearly free of the drug now and no way will I ever take another antidepressant. I should'nt need to. I never used to question what my doctor prescibed for me but now I research everything and then make my mind up as to whether I want to take it. Unfortunately, we are not born with the knowledge of how drugs can affect us.

For me, the main thing is that I am doing all I can to improve my health and wellbeing, and I prefer the natural way where possible:)
