Guest guest
Yes , my 13 year old son is on 150mg of zoloft & everytime we increase he has way more anxiety. He has been on it 10 weeks & 2days. We are just starting to see a small improvement. So I do think the symptons do increase when the meds are upped. What are your sons ocd symptoms? > > My 13 year old son has been on 50mg of zoloft with a little change for > the better. Guest guest
and , OCD increasing with the med is common, should subside. One OCD expert doctor has said that it can be a sign that the medication will work if the OCD increases at first; believe that's been his observation over the years. Don't want to " quote " anyone since I've been around OCD for several years now and my memory as to " who " might be wrong. But I know when I first tried on inositol powder YEARS ago, his OCD worsened, I thought, that first couple weeks or so -- though we were still in the beginning months which were bad anyway -- and I just held on to that thought of what the doctor had said. And the inositol powder did help, giving it that 12-16 week trial period. (and sadly didn't help when we tried it again in the last year and at higher dose too) Hoping that it's a good sign for your kids! > > > > My 13 year old son has been on 50mg of zoloft with a little change > for > > the better. Guest guest
My 8 year old daughter has been on Zoloft for 16 weeks now, starting at 12.5mg and titrating up to 62.5 mg. Her symptoms are definitely worse and she has added many new compulsions. We debated discontinuing the med but were holding out wondering if the med just wasn't at a high enough dose for a long enough time. She's been pretty uninhibited lately which is out of character for her. Based on all this, I just got off the phone with her neuro and we're going to decrease the med starting tomorrow...50mg for 2 weeks, 25 mg. for 2 weeks and then I'll see them in the office to discuss the plan going forward. I hope this wean goes well and we don't see even worse symptoms! With that said, I have read that some believe an initial worsening of symptoms with med increases speaks well for the future success of that particular med. Meds are like playing roulette! Best of luck to you with these difficult decisions!! in NY ________________________________ To: Sent: Tuesday, October 28, 2008 8:02:31 PM Subject: medicine increase and OCD symptoms increase My 13 year old son has been on 50mg of zoloft with a little change for the better. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for the replies on this. I think we are going to keep him on the 100mg until Monday and then call the doctor to see what he thinks if things are still not better by then. We also are still trying to find a therapist in our area who treats OCD in a 13 year old and who has hours after school and takes insurance. Guest guest
, this is my 14-year old DD's 7 weeks on Zoloft, end of second week on 100mg. With each increase, I have seen her symptoms increase, and then subside by the second week. Last night she didn't ask me ONE SINGLE REASSURANCE question! That has not happened since the end of August. So far (knock on wood), I have seen no side effects other than her initial weight loss. This time, instead of titrating up, I'm going to keep her on the 100 for 3 weeks and see what happens. The biggest thing she's still hanging on to is fear of tires. She fears the germs because tires run over dead animals, so she gets in and out of our cars veeeerrrrry slowly to make sure she or her coat or her backpack doesn't touch the tire. I tried to do some exposure with her the other night, which backfired on me bigtime, so I'm letting her do it at her own pace. She knows she needs to, but doesn't want me " pushing " it on her. The one thing I've noticed with the Zoloft, is that she seems much more in tune with other people's feelings. Before, though she didn't have OCD, she just didn't " get " why someone might be sad or hurt or angry, etc. Now, she seems much more able to " empathize " . Anyone else had this happen? Guest guest
Terrific news!!? I have OCD, and I have always had an issue with tires too.? I haven't thought of it, until I just read your post.? When my twins were tots, that was the one thing I would ask them not to touch when they were around the car: the tires.? I would give the excuse that tires are dirty.? I am on medication and don't have any compulsions regarding tires, but I do try to avoid touching them when I carry my groceries in and out of the car.? My OCD fear is regarding rabies and the tires going over roadkill, so I understand.? I imagine with medication, her issue with tires will decrease. Guest guest
That is great, Debbie, that she didn't ask for one single reassurance. Progress! Yay! I've not heard of that happening with meds (more empathetic), but you just never know. Everyone is so individual. I was wondering if it might possibly even be that the OCD has quieted down enough that she can focus on others around her, instead of constantly dealing with the OCD. It's hard to know, but for whatever reason, that is a nice thing. ) BJ > > , this is my 14-year old DD's 7 weeks on Zoloft, end of second week on 100mg. Guest guest
Absolutely!!! My daughter is super sensitive to med increases; we have to use the liquid zoloft and go up super slowly until we get to a therapeutic dose!! Talk to your doctor ---If we go up in 25 increments, she becomes manic and it is so sad to see this...5-10 mg. increases works for her! Guest guest
Debbie, I'm so glad to hear your dd's doing better! Hopefully the symptoms will continue to subside. Yours is a perfect example of what some of us here have heard re: symptoms initially increasing then leveling out. Unfortunately, my daughter's symptoms not only increased but she also acquired many, many new obsessions/compulsions that she wasn't contending with pre-Zoloft.. As I shared with the neuro last night, I actually would like the girl who couldn't get dressed back and trade in the tapping, checking, even # loving, multiple times across every threshold, parking lot line and curb , do everything four times girl that we now know and (still) love! Best of luck with the exposures and no, I didn't notice increased empathy with my daughter.. Just much more uninhibited! Kinda funny at times but def of concern! in NY ________________________________ To: Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2008 10:01:33 AM Subject: Re: medicine increase and OCD symptoms increase , this is my 14-year old DD's 7 weeks on Zoloft, end of second week on 100mg. Guest guest
Personally, when I was very sick with OCD, I was so wrapped up in my fears that I might have seemed self-centered to those who don't understand. Â When I was horribly depressed as an adult, I used to have to force myself to remember to ask people about what was going on in their lives because I knew that was important for our relationship, but my inclination was just to want to cry about what was bothering me and talk about my fears and my feelings of despair. Â Medication takes away my depression and much of my OCD, so I am able to have a free enough mind to be able to have more time to consider how others are feeling and talk about what is important to them.
