Guest guest
Judy, I've heard of the vineland test but can't tell you anything. So far as PDD or anything on autism spectrum, many still do take medication for symptoms/behaviors. Of course knowing some things (obsessions or routines for example) are due to the autism part gives you another way to approach that " problem " but meds might still help to...calm it down a bit if it's out-of-control. LOL, don't know if I'm wording this well. ---- But it does make a difference in ways to approach any problem to know if it's a " personality " type trait due to autism or not. Just wanted to point out that many on spectrum still need medication to help with some things. > > Barb, > Yes my kids do see one psychiatrist.(also an hour away)We have an appointment tomorrow morning at 8:30. My son's psychiatrist talked on the phone with the psychologists I took him to last week and came up with the once a week plan. > > My son can't keep up with his schoolwork. If he misses a day a week it will be detrimental to his schoolwork. Like you mentioned the meds are not working for him. They work against each other and nobody has any answers regarding this. Guest guest
Hi Judy, No I haven't heard of either the vineland test, or anything about PDD and meds (not something I am familiar with). Regardless of diagnosis, it's the symptoms that the meds treat, so I guess you pick and chose on that one based on what the presenting symptoms are. Challenge being with the OCD how much it can look like other things...and how the meds can trigger symptoms, and you end up in a maze of symptoms, right???! I did go to a lecture recently where a a fabulous psychiatrist spoke on drug interactions, and reasons why meds failed etc. The issue of the missing enzyme to process(?) specifically risperidone(not the other atypicals), and prozak, and other drugs I didn't know. I'm pretty sure this is the case for our son. And that is only one aspect that they have discovered, and it is not well known, our doctors had not heard of it. There is a " test " , but it would never be done, only in research. All that to say, still so much that is not known, so one never knows what all is happening. Not helpful to you at the moment I know. Just to say, in the end go with what your gut tells you, if you can be clear at all. What do you really think is going on? The other thing I did this summer was take our son to an alternative person who could test which drugs our son had a positive response to according to a machine (QXCI) he hooked him up to. It did confirm exactly the ones he had trouble with and the ones we had positive results with, but weren't sure about. I took our whole cabinet of meds! Normally he does it for vitamins, but said he would be willing to do it with the meds. Can't determine dose at all, only if the body likes/positive response to the med. It just gave us more information to help us feel that yes this was the best med choice out of the choices given. Since there are no mainstream tests out there for meds it was a way we thought couln't hurt to try. Just a thought. I recently heard a young pyschiatrist speaking on mental health and spirituality who said " if what you are doing is not working try something else, doesn't matter whether it is mainstream or not. If we had all the answers there would be no more problems. " I spoke with him afterward too, really open minded person. He experiences first hand every day not being able to have " the answers " . Although I know many who have been helped by him immensely. Sometimes it is the connection that is made, or not, with the person who is trying to help. Just some thoughts... I don't have answers, mostly questions and wonderings after our own experience. Keep searching for those answers! Hugs! Guest guest
Hi Barb, I heard of that test somewhere, where you can find out if your going to react to a certain medication. It sounds like it would be worthwhile! Still searching, almost 9 years later!
