Guest guest
Welcome, Anne. Did you try more than one SSRI? Sometimes one can work, when another can be a disaster. Just a thought. There are other things to try too. Inositol is one thing that some have had success with. We tried it and didn't, unfortunately. Other things are Fish Oil, Magnesium, and some things others have mentioned by Natural Remedies(?). Pure Calm comes to mind. I'm sure others will speak up once they see your post. There are many who've tried other things and have had some success. Is your son also seeing a good therapist that specializes in the treatment of OCD, using CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and ERP (exposure and response prevention)? That is the recommended first line of treatment for OCD. Using ERP has been proven to make permanent physical changes to the brain. Our son has benefited greatly from it. Glad you found us. This is great place to get info and support. You will find many here who know what you are dealing with and going through. Guest guest
Hi Anne, I see BJ mentioned some things. Here is an article regarding inositol use for OCD: http://westsuffolkpsych.homestead.com/Inositol_and_OCD.html Note that different brands of inositol powder are different so far as " strength " , that is 1/4 tsp will equal different mg than the article states. My son was turning 12 when he went on it. We ended up around...14 grams or so and OCD was pretty bad. Some people have benefitted from much less, even 6 grams. My son is now 19. Inositol did help the first time we used it but tried it again in high school, even at higher dosages but not a bit of help. Have tried other things too, no help yet but still trying. He doesn't want a prescription again though I'd be happy for him to go back on Celexa. > > Hi, > > My son, just turned 11, has a lot of OCD behavior. Guest guest
Hi, Anne. Yes, OCD is considered an anxiety disorder. Although, some don't feel anxiety attached to their rituals (like our son). Instead they need it to feel " just right " , or they have a hard time letting it go and moving on. Our son had anxiety attached to his OCD " intrusive thoughts " and his GAD thoughts. The meds helped bring the anxiety levels down, and eventually made them stop. How long was he on them (Zoloft; Prozac), Anne? Our son had that reaction both times he was on Celexa. But, it stopped as his body adjusted to the meds. It's a common side effect. It would flare up with each dosage increase, then calm back down once his body adapted. He would literally fall down on the sofa at times and say, " I feel so hyper " . As long as he isn't showing aggression and signs of BPD, that should pass. What did the prescribing doctor think? Was is a pediatric psychiatrist that saw him? It can be so hard to find people who really understand OCD. <sigh> It's so frustrating! Hope something helps soon. Maybe some of the natural stuff will work for him, then you won't have to worry about the side effects of the SSRIs. BJ > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > My son, just turned 11, has a lot of OCD behavior. Guest guest
My son just had 3-D scan and Dr recommended staying away from SSRI or any serotonin booster based on his scan and past failures with meds..so we are now trying dopamine booster type meds.. So I started him on a tiny 2.5 dexadrine..wow..he could finally concentrate in school(it's a dopamine booster). So he gets ativan to cool down the anxiety and the dexadrine so he can think and so far that combo is working for him. Dr also wants us to try amantadine which is a dopamine booster...I'm not thrilled about the ativan but it seems to be the only med to stop the anxiety and the Dr said if he has anxiety he can't think!! > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > My son, just turned 11, has a lot of OCD behavior. Guest guest
, I'm so glad there's been some improvement! Now, did the doctor want to add amantadine as a 3rd med or switch him to it? Just thinking the longer he is on dexadrine (recently begun), the more improvement he might see on it?? Keep us updated on progress! > > My son just had 3-D scan and Dr recommended staying away from SSRI or > any serotonin booster based on his scan and past failures with > meds..so we are now trying dopamine booster type meds.. > So I started him on a tiny 2.5 dexadrine..wow..he could finally > concentrate in school(it's a dopamine booster). Guest guest
Is this a spect scan? If so, what doctor did you use? I have been thinking about getting a spect scan for two of my sons (now ages 8 and 11) for years. Some doctors feel that this can be used for research purposes only, however others I have talked to feel it can help with RXing the correct medication based on where there is problems in blood flow, etc. Any thoughts??? Guest guest
Yes, BJ, it is very frustrating knowing exactly what to do. We are going to a new neurologist soon, so maybe he can give some insight and new protocols. We have been to a ped. psychiatrist as well. > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > My son, just turned 11, has a lot of OCD behavior. Guest guest
Med update,,,my son has been a zombie this week! I started neurontin, small dose at night..only 100mg and it's been terrible..he's not sleeping and is spaced out all day. I am not going to give it..I know my Dr wants me to try it..but we are all going to loose our minds from lack of sleep!I have seen no change in OCD and anxiety either...I will keep on the ativan & dexadrine to concentrate in school. I think we still need something for intrusive thoughts,, > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > > > My son, just turned 11, has a lot of OCD behavior. Guest guest
Have they tried an antidepressant like Prozac or Zoloft? This is what our neurologist would recommend next if my sons mood swings and compulsive behaviors don't settle down with 5 mg of abilify. I believe we would use zoloft along with the abilify. 5 mg of abilify is all he wants him on because of his small size and age. I wondered if you'd tried antidepressants before. For supplements we have tried 5HTP and GABA calm along with monolaurin and a yeast fighter nystatin before. It did seem to help with his impulsiveness but not enough to not have to go with the meds. He was still off task too much and fallinh behind at school. The abilify keeps him focused, less ADHD and anxiety, and less tics. I hope you find answers soon. Dr. from Shands psychiatry clinic recommended tennex for the tics and adhd. Does your son have tics?
