and Harry, I know you know, but forgot to mention... test prior to eating

each meal as well. So, testing should be...

* prior to eating 80 to 120

* 2 hours past eating 120 or less

* 3 hours past eating should be lowering from 2 hour test

Thanks ,

I guess I am going to have to master Carb counting and weights and

measurements scales to figure out what type of carbohydrate food I am eating

and the size and weight/amount of it I am consuming.

This morning I had a bowl of cereal of Uncle Sam cereal with 1% milk, and of

course I drink straight black coffee as I learned to do quite a time back.

I haven't taken a 2 or a 3 hour post meal glucose reading today.

My fasting glucose reading this morning was 168, while yesterday it was 132.

Right now I am sticking my finger 5 or six times per day. I wish I had one

of those sugar track glucose monitors, which measures the glucose level with

infrared technology, no needle sticks!

Do you have an idea of how much those monitors cost?

Hi Harry.

You don't need to entirely master weights and

measurements scales... you need to master carb counting in general smiles.

With regards to your breakfast... uncle sams cereal, lets assume is like

cornflakes, you could use www.calorieking.com to look up corn flakes and get

an idea of what carbs were in it. I use a cup measure only. I have one

plastic cup measure that I keep on the counter and wash it after i use it.

After all, most measurements are either a cup or 1/2 cup so the cup is all I

need. I use it to measure milk, cereal, etc. So, for your breakfast, it was

very high carb. Lets assume you had 1 cup of sams club corn flakes. Using

calorieking.com looking up corn flakes, this is what I got:

cup (1 oz)

Calories

112 cals

Total Fats

0.1 g

Sugars

-

Carbohydrates

24.9 g

So 1 cup of milk is 11 grams and 25 grams for the cup of cereal would put

you at 36 grams of carbs. That is not to bad. I try to limit my carbs to 30

per meal but I'm type 1. Most type 2 diabetics I know, YMMV, limit their

carbs to 60 a day. That is to extreme for me and other type twos keep their

carbs at like 20 to 25 grams per meal.

So, if you ate 36 grams of carbs for breakfast and your 2 hour post check

was 138, for example, then you know that 36 carbs for breakfast is to much

so bump it down to 20 or 25 total carb grams the next morning and check 2

hours past eating to see what you were. Instead of a whole cup of milk, 11

carbs, drink a half cup which would be 5.5 grams plus the 25 for the cup of

cereal makes it 30.5 grams. Or, eat 1 piece of toast, 15 grams of carbs, and

a cup of milk which is 11 carbs which would total 26 carbs which is a better

choice/amount. You could also eat 1/2 cup of cereal rather than a cup and

that would be 12.5 carbs and with 1 cup of milk at 11 grams would be a total

of 23.5 grams. You just got to learn how to shuffle stuff around. If your

still hungry after you eat breakfast, eat eggs since they are very low carb.

about finger pricking/testing...

the ear meter is not for sale yet, it is in development. So, there is a

finger routine I use that really keeps my fingers comfortable and they don't

get sore. Here is how I do it:

Monday through Thursday left hand

* monday left pointer finger

* Tuesday left middle finger

* wednesday left ring finger

* thursday left pinky finger

Friday through Sunday right hand

* friday right middle finger

* saturday right ring finger

* sunday right pinky finger

I use my thumbs on both hands and my right pointer finger as backup fingers.

Meaning, if I can't get blood from one of the days fingers, I use my thumbs

or my right pointer finger. The pricking pattern is simple, it lets you get

8 pricks on each finger. This pattern applies to all fingers I just

mentioned. It goes like this... you prick three times down the left side of

the finger spacing them out, three times down the right side of the finger

spacing them out, and twice across the upper part of the finger (just below

the tip). By the time you get back to monday, your left fingers are healed

up and your good to go. By the time you finish your left hand for the first

4 days of the week, your right hand is healed up and ready to go.

Sounds like good advice!

It also seems reasonable, and oh yeah, thanks for the tips on finger

sticking.

Hey let me know how it goes for you for dinner. Try to limit your carbs for

dinner to like 25 and test 2 hours past dinner then 3 hours past dinner and

post your results. We'll take a look at what you ate and see if we can work

it out some for you.

8AM Fasting blood sugar of 168

then that bowl of cereal and milk for breakfast

Pre lunch 12PM sugar level of 201

Then I ate a ham and pepper flavored cheese sandwich on rye bread with

mustard plus a medium size kosher dill pickle and 1/2 or half of a ripe

fresh pear and a glass of diet Snapple ice tea. I don't know how many carbs

I consumed.

2PM glucose reading of 236

ok, lets look at lunch to start. 1 slice of rye bread, looked this up on the

USDA food search engine, has 15.4 grams of carbs. So, I am assuming you had

2 slices of rye bread so that is 30.8 grams right there. medium size kosher

dill pickle was free so could have ate 9 of them if you wanted. Lots of

salt though so be careful. 1/2 of a large fresh pear is 15 grams of carbs.

Now you are at 45.8 grams. 8 ounce serving of diet snapple icetea is 1 gram

so is pretty much free but lets add it for the sake of adding. So, for

lunch, you ate 46.8 grams of carbs. 2 hours later you were in the two

hundreds. Way to high. We gotta bump your carbs down for lunch and breakfast

since after breakfast, prior to lunch, you were in the 200 still. For

testing purposes Harry, lets have fun and try some of these meal plans...

breakfast 20 carbs: 1 piece of toast with butter, 15 carbs. You could fix up

2 or 3 scrambeled eggs and use your buttered toast to make a nice egg

sandwich. Feel free to have a few pieces of bacon or sausage as well but no

more than 2 pieces of bacon or sausage since the fat will slow down the

absorption of the carbs in the bread. If your still hungry, sick as it

sounds, eat a pickle and a piece of cheese since it has no carbs.

lunch: 20 carbs: 1 piece of rye bread, 15.4 carbs, and as much lunch meat on

it as you want. As many pickles as you want, drink the diet snapple, and

leave off the pear.

what do you have planned for dinner and a bed snack? Don't eat it quite yet.

lets figure it out.

Update on carb consumption for yesterday. For lunch I only had one slice of

rye bread, so subtract 15 carbs from the lunch total and for dinner I had

roast beef and turnip greens and coleslaw, I don't know how many carbs were

in that coleslaw dressing. For afternoon snack I ate a handfull of unsalted

walnuts and for my evening snack after dinner I ate a handfull of salted

roasted almonds. I figure I had less, or no more than 60 grams of carbs

yesterday altogether.

I think that is about the lowest carbohydrate consumption I have had per day

in my existence.

Today: So what happened?

7:30A fasting glucose level of 95

Then for breakfast I had this morning one and a half slices of rye toasted

buttered bread for around 22 grams of carbs, plus two scrambled eggs and

some all fruit strawberry low sugar spread of 5 grams total and a morning

medication which 2 grams of carbs for a total of about 29 or 30 grams of

carbs.

An hour and 40 minutes later my glucose level reading was 205.

first, lets look at your fasting bgs of 95 this morning. BTW great job on

that Harry!! That was a result of what you ate, or actually didn't eat the

night before. Lets take a look at what you had for dinner last evening...

roast beef and turnip greens and coleslaw

Very low carb and I bet it was filling! I'm not certain how many carbs are

in the coleslaw dressing but you can look that up on calorieking.com if

interested. It probably wasn't to much assuming it didn't have sugar in it.

For a snack you had handfull of salted

roasted almonds which is very low carb. So, for dinner and snack you had low

carb food and your morning bgs was 95!!

Now lets deal with the 2 hour post test this morning that was high. First of

all, in all type 1 diabetics, or diabetics in general, bgs in the morning

will run high. Thus, you are best to not eat any carbs or at most, 10 grams

for breakfast. Reason? Your liver releases sugar in the morning to help the

body wake up giving it energy and then by you eating carbs, those break down

to sugars and then 2 hours later bam! very high. Those persons who don't

have diabetes, their pancreas is able to deal with the release of sugar from

the liver to wake up in the morning and keep it in range. Since your

pancreas is not functioning properly, you can't do this so are now starting

to rely on insulin to help you out. I should say insulin and low carb eating

to help you mimic this natural metobolic behavior.

So, I suggest for breakfast to lower your carbs to 10 grams or less or if

possible, none for breakfast for now til you get your bgs under control.

Keep in mind, any carbs you eat in the morning, you are increasing the sugar

in your blood since your liver is already dumping sugar in it to help you

get energy to wake up. So, I'd say, if possible, don't eat carbs for

breakfast. Fill up on eggs, cheese, and for replacement of bread, try making

a lettuce wrap of eggs and cheese! It's really good for real!

Lets look at yesterday for a minute, you were 200, I think it was, prior to

breakfast, you ate carbs, which further made the sugar in your body increase

since the liver was putting it in naturally. You ate carbs so by lunch, you

were still 200. At lunch, you ate more carbs so you kept the bgs elevated by

putting more sugar in your blood.

I'd say for lunch today, try eating like 10 grams of carbs for now. Don't

eat fruit, crackers, pretzels, snacks like carbs, etc. Eat some left over

roast, cheese, pickles, lettuce/salad (watch carbs in salad dressings, and

some nuts. I can guarantee you that your 2 hour post test will be down. Let

me know what you think. I'm here to work on this with you. Your doing a

great job Harry and are learning as you go!! Keep up the great work!

Pre-lunch glucose reading of 138.

For lunch I ate another ham, cheese and rye bread (one slice) with mustard

and a kosher dill pickle and a glass of diet vanilla Pepsi.

Two hours after this 15 gram carb lunch my glucose level was 189.

ok, for breakfast, you were 95 and 2 hours later were high and prior to

lunch were high at 136. Although 136 doesn't seem to high, it is high enough

that the 15 grams you ate for lunch shot you up even more. I.E sugar already

in your blood more sugar, the rye bread, added even more to notch it up for

your 2 hour post test. I'd

say you need to focus on the morning sugars since again, the liver is

producing sugar to help you wake up and your pancreas can not keep up with

the natural sugar your liver is putting out. The lantus is designed to help

with this process and your getting there so keep up the good work my friend.

I am seeing a pattern of you running high morning and if we can get that

down by eating no carbs, or non quick acting carbs, I think your pre lunch

will be much lower like 90 then that 1 piece of rye bread may not increase

you so high. Make sense? It's all trial and error...

For breakfast tomorrow, eat eggs, cheese on lettuce or something like that

but do not eat any quick acting carbs like bread, cereal, milk, fruit,

juice, etc. Your reward will be that piece of rye bread for lunch smiles!

BTW Harry, did your doc teach you how to adjust the lantus? If so, what did

he tell you to do? You may need a little more lantus but don't ever want to

give insulin advice, only meal advice but am curious to know if he taught

you how to adjust insulin based on your bgs.

One week ago my doctor placed me on 5 units of Lantus and I am to continue

taking glyburide 10 mg twice per day and Actos 45mb in the morning until a

good basil level is reached, which should take a couple of weeks.

The three days later my Lantus was increased to 7 units per day along with

those oral meds.

I started carb counting yesterdzay, and today the doctor said lets watch

what happens for another week before making any further changes.

sounds great. I'm glad your doc is wanting to see how the carb counting goes

for you. This is only your second day and your starting to get an upper hand

on it. Good job Harry!

Today's Update:

Last night I thought I might have blown the diet routine, but was pleasantly

surprised two hours after a gourmet dinner that my wife had prepared

for out of town guests who shared dinner with us at our table.

I ate baked chicken, asparagus, several slices of raw avocado, two or three

slices of fresh tomato, along with diet raspberry ice tea topped off with

desert of a bowl of sugarless strawberry-banana jello and a cup of black

coffee.

Wow!, it surely was yummy.

Two hours later my gbs reading was 124. Then I took my 7 units of Lantus

and ate a couple of handfuls of nuts.

Fasting gbs this morning was 87.

One and a half hours after breakfast , which was a couple of scrambled eggs

and two pieces of Canadian bacon and a diet Coke, this morning plus that 2

grams of crabs in my morning dose of liquid medication, my gbs rose to 138.

Hi Harry.

First of all, I want to say congradulations!! You are getting it down

Harry!! Good job good job!! Your awesome!! Now, lets review what you had for

dinner since it was 100% very very low carb. And, the benefit was, you were

filled up and loved the meal! That is important to understand... just

because you didn't eat carbs, doesn't mean you can't enjoy your food! So

lets look at what you said here and pick it apart some...

Last night I thought I might have blown the diet routine, but was pleasantly

surprised

* no, you didn't blow it at all and we are gunna see why

I ate baked chicken

* very very low carb and quite filling!

asparagus

* again, a veggie that is very low carb if it was corn or peas you'd be in

trouble so stick with this type of veggie!!

, several slices of raw avocado

* again, a very low carb veggie that is great to eat on salad as well. If

you had bread instead of the avocado you'd be in trouble!

, two or three

slices of fresh tomato

* Tomatos are great and may effect bgs in some diabetics but it is apparent

it didn't effect yours so that is good. They have some carb in them, more

than green veggies, so don't eat 9 pounds of them or it will raise bgs

smiles

, along with diet raspberry ice tea topped off with

desert of a bowl of sugarless strawberry-banana jello and a cup of black

coffee.

* Man, all those are carb free.. the jello, tea, and coffee!

Wow!, it surely was yummy.

* So when are you going to invite me over for dinner smiles? I'm so hungry

reading this and it sounds so good!!

Two hours later my gbs reading was 124.

* hurray hurray hurray hurray hurray!!! Way to go Harry!! Your getting it

down man!! See that, low carb eating isn't to bad after all eh? Now, lets

review your meal and add the carbs to it so you can see what would have

happened if you ate carb rich foods. You have 1 4 oz chicken breast stuffed

with stuffing. Ouch! Stuffing is so high carb it would have been about 25

grams of carbs in the stuffing alone. Then you have corn for a veggie,

another 30 grams of carbs, then you have 2 slices of white bread, 30 grams

of carbs, and a very small, and i mean small, bowl of icecream for dessert,

that is another 20 grams of carbs. This would total 105 grams of carbs that

would break down very quickly to sugar and spike your sugar and no meds you

are on could have handeled it at all. Not lantus, oral meds, nor exercise...

you would have been doomed! See the difference? Your bgs 2 hours later would

have been in the 300 range with a meal like this.

* not bad for this morning! Try waiting 2 hours to check since it may have

been lower than 134 could have been like 128 which is a big difference when

you are striving for sugar control and results. Watch that rye bread for

lunch Harry! If you eat it, all kidding aside, go hold the wall and jog in

place for 3 minutes to speed up your metabolism to help keep that 15 grams

of carbs from spiking your sugar.

and finally, good job Harry!!

Update:

pre-lunch gbs was 110

For lunch I ate the traditional ham and cheese on rye with a pickle and a

diet Coke and a bite of cantaloupe, which I figured came in at just under 20

grams of carbs.

After lunch I walked for a little over a half hour and the two hour after

lunch reading of the gbs was 173.

Hi Harry.

oops... the bite of cantaloupe, when you say bite, could that be like 1/2

cup of chopped up? If so, that was 15 grams of carbs. Fruit is a bgs killer

man. Tomorrow, try eating the 1 piece of rye bread and not the fruit. Should

help. I know this might be pushing it but would you be willing to leave off

the rye bread and eat your meat over a salad? If so, I'm certain your bgs

would be in range with no problems at all. If not, *chuckles*, I understand

smiles.

BTW watch out for carbs at dinner! Don't do it Harry! Resist it! LOL

BTW 110 is great Harry!! Man your getting it down my friend! I think you

almost have breakfast, dinner, and bed time meals in place. It's the lunch

that we gotta work on smiles. Maybe tear off the top inch of the rye bread

so you aren't eating a whole slice but getting the taste?

By a bite I mean I had only one bite. Enough to fill the mouth.

Ut ohHarry... *coughcough*, you might have to give up that piece of rye and

replace that quick acting 15 grams of carbs with some slow acting carb like

a whole can of green beans since thatis 12 carbs and are slow acting and not

quick acting so your sugar won't spike after lunch. Try it out, do an

experiment, tomorrow, don't eat the rye bread and eat a veggie instead and 2

hours check. Next day, eat the rye bread then do a 2 hour test. Bet you the

veggies will bring your sugar way down. Eat some brussal sprouts, 1 cup has

6 grams of carbs, or green beans, 1 cup has 6 carbs, or 1 cup of salad, 6

grams of carbs, etc. , Not saying you have to, but I got a hunch that rye

bread is to much for your noon lunch. Have fun and test this out on your

body. Have fun experimenting with different foods.

Hi Harry.

120.... good job!! For dinner, to bring the bgs down, only eat meat and 1

cup of a veggie like brussal sprouts. Don't eat any quick acting carbs like

bread, milk, potato, tomatos, rice, beans, etc. You are drowsy from the high

bgs, typical reaction to high bgs, and when you come down from being high,

your body will feel tired as well. Don't ever eat chinese, ever. It is one

of the richest carb infested foods you could ever eat. Don't ever eat

chinese and if possible, don't ever eat pizza. Especially as a type 2

diabetic. Those two foods are your worst enemy. They are so high in fat and

carbs that they are extremely potent. I think the canadian bacon has sugar

in it and if you had regular bacon, your bgs would be lower than 120 after

your 2 hour post breakfast test. So, if you had 2 eggs and 2 pieces of

regular bacon, doesn't have sugar in it, your bgs would probably be around

90. Tomorrow, leave off 1 piece of the canadian bacon adn eat only 1. Have

like 2 eggs, 1 piece of canadian bacon, and a pickle or 1 cup of salad and

toss your eggs over the salad and break up your bacon over top of it. Don't

use any dressing on it just for a test. Be very careful for dinner, it is ok

to eat meat, but do not eat more than 6 grams of slow acting carbs like 1

cup of salad, 1 cup of brussal sprouts, etc. Let me know what your bgs is

prior to bed. If possible, I'd even suggest skipping dinner and walking 30

mins on the tred mill and then get a bgs reading prior to bed. If you are

120 or less, eat some cheese, ham, a pickle, and maybe a hand full of nuts.

Skip dinner if you can. If you can't, no problem, just eat meat and only 1

cup of a slow acting carb/veggie.

Harry, Chinese food is very high in carbs-especially things like the sauces

and the egg roll papersplus Chinese food has sugar added to it-like the

soup. Keep experimenting! When your sugar goes down, you will feel less

Fasting gbs this morning was 92.

So I tried that experiment and for breakfast had only scrambled eggs and

some Canadian bacon and two hours later my gbs was 120.

Then I celebrated by going to lunch with my cousin at a chinese restaurant

and I just had a bowl of hot and sour soup and two egg rolls dipped in duck

sauce and mustard. Two hours later my gbs is 272 and I am so sleepy and

drowsy I can hardly write this message.

Update:

After that chinese lunch I finally went to bed with a gbs of 165 and this

morning my fasting gbs was 100.

So, I only ate a couple of scrambled eggs and ate one piece of Canadian

bacon and drank a diet Pepsi. One hour and fourty minutes later my gbs was

115.

I am feeling better today.
