time out

I am not thinking of using this as a procedure for any children I am currently

working with. However, I was in a discussion the other day with a couple of

social workers and we were talking about the use of time out when disciplining

children (in this case, foster children). It is widely encouraged in the state

foster care system where I live.

Now, I had always heard that time out longer than 1 minute was not any more

effective than 1 minute time outs. I'd heard that this was a researched subject

matter. Can anyone point me in the direction of articles that directly relate

to this? Are there any articles that specifically relate to

duration/effectiveness of time out?

AND, while I'm asking (), I have also heard (from various consultants...) that

when a child responds with a specific target behavior (when given an Sd),

reinforcement must be given within 1.8 seconds of the response. Where did that

number come from? I have looked and have not been successful at finding

articles that relate to this.

Thanks in advance,

Amy
