Hmmm...we are on the same wavelength here in Oregon.

I've just started researching video cameras mostly for looking at athletic performance, but certainly would use it for gait analysis as well.

I look forward to hearing what others have to recommend.

If the camera has the option of slow motion it may help. I just use my sony video camera. Also a tripod or a person with a steady hand works too.

Hi Deanne, Does your video camera have slow motion playback? If so, which model do you have? We are definitely looking for slow motion capability.

Thanks

FYI,

Per Zink you can use quicktime software you can view frame by frame...software is free online, I believe.

There are a couple of new video camera's coming out that have the capabilty to shoot at greater than 30 or 60/fps (standard) - I believe the sanyo xacti 1010 comes out in july will shoot at 300 fps so that when you view at 30 or 60 fps you will be able to really slow the motion down. They will cost around 1000.00 - which, of course, is about 500.00 more than my allowance:)

If you really feel like spending some money, (5,000.00 or more) there are some nice gait analysis systems (sports-motion.com) that will allow much more.

, Unfortunately, my camera does not have slow motion capabilities. I wish it did because it would definetly came in handy. I am not aware of one that does but if you find a good one please pass it along.

I have done a fair amount of CA gait analysis and have experimented with many cameras and software and I feel there really is no way around buying high end equipment; if you are really serious about offering this type of diagnostics. If you would like to play and see what is out there just about any camera will do. If you are looking for slow-mo then high speed cameras are the way to go. Normal cameras generally do 25-30fps (frames per sec.) at "ok" resolutions. High speed cameras can do 60fps to 10, 000 fps depending on how much you what to spend and what you are using it for. If you plug normal 30 fps video into a video editing program then you can make it look like slow-mo but it really just copies and adds frames so it "looks like" slow-mo. Anyone that is running Windows as your OS has Windows Movie Maker. It can be found in your start

menu. It is very easy to use and will give you the ability to look at video frame by frame or add effects like slow-mo, though like I stated above it is an "effect". There are several more complicated programs out there that can be downloaded for free as a trail. MaxTrax has been very easy to use for me and has many tools for 2D motion analysis like marker tracking and scales that can aid you in determining velocities, accelerations and speeds of objects/ joints/limbs. The problems I have had with using normal camcorders is that even at a walk the distal portions of limbs become blurred, especially during the swing phase of the gait cycle. If you have a camera that you can adjust the shutter speed then you can put it at its highest level and this can help but you need to add more light to the room you are filming in. Big lights! Not just your normal lighting. Much of this takes more time then it is worth and tends to still be very subjective.

I still have not decided if spending $5000+ is worth it for 2D analysis sense all joints lend to some rotation. 3D systems appear to give much more information but also take much time to set up. After going to Auburn for their Sports Med. Symposium and seeing the GaitRite pressure mat I am leaning more towards using something like that for objective measurement of rehab treatments. Right now when I what to video a patient for comparison of function I just use my still shot Sony camera. It only has 25fps but has a much bigger/ nicer lens that gives me better resolution then my DV camera. It also saves me time on uploading it on to my computer as if saves the files as .mpeg that can be cut and pasted into an appropriate folder/ medical record. DV cameras have to be uploaded via firewire which then has to be

captured in real time then converted to a useable file format to be viewed and manipulated.

There is much info out there and playing with free trials can be fun and very educational search- motion analysis, high speed cameras- gait analysis and so on. Talk to the sales reps and if you are good at it they sometimes will give you extended trial periods giving you time to understand what you are looking for and if it fits into your treatment plans and time per patient. Good luck and hope some of this helps. Robby

Hi Carol-I looked into the casio and while it is REALLY cool, the video quality on regular sized screen is not very good. You can view some of the video on you-tube if you just do a search for the camera model...

I'm a very long way from being a video expert, but doesn't most video look sort of bad on YouTube? Something about the format and the way it's converted from the uploaded video file. Could very well be wrong, though.

Check this out:

I haven't looked at the site in detail to see if it gives any info on screen size effects, though I really just want to use the video on my computer.

I really lust after one of these cameras :) Now, if I stayed home from the Vet Rehab Symposium, I'd have plenty of cash to purchase one.

Apparently some of the issue is how it's compressed and some is just a matter of pixel number. If you look at the 1200 fps pixel number it is really really low, which is why the video shows up in a smaller frame respective to the speed....
