Hello All,

Mr. B has had, as he calls it now, the " BMs " for the past two days and it

hasn't stopped yet. Hospice thinks it might be a tiny bit of flu going around

with their patients. He eats a meal and then has to go to the bathroom right

away (he never makes it though...he's in a wheelchair), and by the next meal he

is hungry again and eats everything as usual.

He has also developed a UTI, and I know I have read about them but it didn't

stick because he has never had one before. Is the diarrhea a side affect of

the UTI? And, is Bactrim okay for him to take? Is there a special antibiotic

to give to LBD's with UTI's? Is there something I should be looking for that

I forgot about? Probably...but...I do remember they get a bit combative ? and

hallucinate more? He has started the hallies again for the past few days so

maybe that is why.

Any fresh advice would be welcome. This is the first time and I don't want

things to get any worse than they are.

Thank you all in advance for your wonderful support! Have a great evening.

Peace, Stevie

Stevie in So. California

LO - Mr. B (Uncle) 82 yrs.

Lives in my home - 3 yrs.

DX Parkinson's 1993

DX LBD 2003 - probably has PDD

End stage meds: Hytrin, E.S Tylenol (Hallies have subsided) ...but have

started up again.

Was on: Sinemet, Seroguel, Elavil, Lasix, Hytrin, Roxinal, Aciphex,

Amitriptyline

Was given Ativan and Seroquel in NH for 5 days (Jan '06), hasn't been the

same since

Daily BP usually 68/52

Severe shoulder pain, hip pain, and shortness of breath.

Now taking Trilisate Liquid for pain - seems to be working

* * * * * * * *

THe NH was giving him Tylenol, both for fever, which

spiked in the late afternoon/evening and probably for

pain as well. He is doing better now that they

finally prescribed a different antibiotic. I have a

feeling that he got some kind of staph infection when

he was catheritized and one place or the other, as

there was some mention on the UTI report I asked for

about staph. I know the one antibiotic he was on did

not work, and the one he's on now has seemed to help.

He is much more alert but still does not eat or sleep

like he was at home.

Hello Donna,

He must be getting confused because he looks at me like he doesn't know who I

am or what I'm doing here? He is definetly different and " slouches " in his

chair.

Thank you so much for your input and thoughts and prayers. Much Peace to

you, Stevie

Stevie,

Diarrhea can be a side effect of the antibiotic. Hope the " BMs "

pass soon and Mr. B is feeling better. As for the UTI, my dad would

often be more confused and sometimes lethargic when he has a UTI.

We would usually see some kind of decline in his condition. My

thoughts and prayers are with you and Mr. B.

My LO hasn't had a UTI either, so, Stevie, I sure can't answer your

question, but would help if I could. Now wasn't I just a big heap o' help?

The good bacteria in the intestine is killed off as well as the bad in the

urinary tract. The doctor can prescribe a med that is live bacteria to help. And

some say that yogurt with active culture will work(I believe that Columbia is

a good one ).

Hi Stevie

Poor Mr. B and poor you!! My mom had a UTI in August

and she also had the runs with it. Once she started

the antibiotic her diarrhea stopped. I do know that

antibiotics can cause diarrhea too. But it seemed to

be a symptom for my mom. She was hospitalized for 3

days then released. She just recently had another one

in the NH and just finished another round of

antibiotics. She is doing very well right now. Tell

Mr. B we are all praying for me. And take care of

you!!

Hello Dena,

I just fetched this message out of the Spam folder too!

I am hoping to keep Mr. B out of the hospital/NH because I'm sure it will do

him in the next time he has to go there. He gets so frightened. So far he is

doing okay on the anti's...I know that because he told me he was " better " and

the UTI had gone away. LOL He's so determined to be " healthy " ! I'm so

sorry your Mom had to go to the hospital. She must have had it pretty bad. We

will send some of Mr. B's " strength " to her so she can get better too!

Much Peace and Prayers to you and your Mom, Stevie

P.S...I am working on that " taking care of myself " thing....Thank you!

It's true, with UTI's, it can cause a dementia to get remarkably

worse, or with any other type of infection as well. We can almost

tell when my mom has a UTI before we even have tested the urine,

since she just gets so much worse with the hallucinations and

confusion. In fact, if she wasn't complaining about burning while

urinating or any symptoms, they would still test it if she gets like

that, it's almost a sure sign.

Bactrim is an okay antibiotic as far as I know, with LBD, it's

usually what they put her on. It can cause diarrhea like any

antibiotic, since it also takes away the normal bacteria in the

bowel, which then causes the diarrhea. They can treat the diarrhea

sometimes with plain Immodium or whatever - or sometimes just wait

it out until the UTI is better.

Yep, yogurt works too with some people, and I think the name of the

drug is Diflucan. However, I'm not sure if it is an okay drug to

use with LBD, have never researched it.

Antibiotics can kill the good bacteria that fight yeast so yeast infections can

also occur.

Yes, yeast is the result of killing all the bacteria. No matter

what organ. :-)

Hello All,

Okay....here we go again. Mr. B is seeing the pack of dogs outside the

breakfast nook, and birds too, and people in the kitchen AND was a bit combative

with the Caregiver today! Oh oh....now......where do we go? He has been taking

the Trilisiate for two weeks now...very willingly...almost TOO willinglly and

he is starting the bad hallies again and was " coma-Lewy " all day today until

dinner time and just " snapped out of it " !

Antibiotics can kill the good bacteria that fight yeast so yeast infections

can also occur.

This seems to be a half truncated message from a while back?
