Hi :

No I do not remove the strip from the machine. I just prick my finger, then

find the little hole where the pad is for the blood,

and try to hold it in that place as I squeeze my finger. I do miss a lot

though. No the way I cheat sometimes is to get my hubby

or another sighted person to help if I am getting to frustrated.

how do you get the blood on the strip. do you take it out of the monitor, then

apply the blood and then put it back in. Is this

hi, oh no, you don't take the strip out. when you turn the unit n it will

beep at you, and will tell you to first put the strilp in, then after a

cupple of seconts it will ask you to " aply sample " then after you have

don this it would countdown about 30 seconts, or something like that. then

you will get the answer.

One thing that I found that works is to keep your hands near the meter when

you stick your finger. You might be bleeding early and the blood drops off

before you get to the meter otherwise. I use an old One Touch 2 with no

guide. I can feel with the opposite hand where the strip goes in so I can

find the dot.

i TOO AM TOTALLY BLIND AND DO 4 OR MORE BLOOD SUGARS A DAY. i POKE MY FINER

AND IMMEDICAAATELY, SQUEEZE IT TO GET MORE BLOOD OUT AND PUT IT ON THE

STRIP-BEFORE i FORGET EXACTLY WHERE i POLED IT! iF ENOUGH BLOOD COME S OUT

i CAN USUALLY DO IT THE FIRST TIME, BUT MY PROBLEM IS THAT i DON'T GET

ENOUGH BLOOD OUT, SO HAVE TO STICK MYSELF SEVERAL TIMES. wHAT MACHINE ARE

YOU USING? i HAVE THE aCCUCHECK vOICE MATE, WHICH AGGREVATES ME, BUT IT

DOES TAKE LESS BLOOD THAN THE OTHER ONE.

hi,

how are you, I read the message you left here, and just wanted to offer

support. I am newly diabetic, and I am learning first hand, the trials and

tribulations of this illness, each day has its own toughness scale, they say

god always has a reason for saving us from things. him being there with you,

may have taken your sight, but, it preserved your life, which is a blessing

in itself. I am not at the pricking my self every day stage yet. the

doctor checks me once a month, I am sure I am headed there. but I believe

each person is special in their own way, and though we are blind, and have

to face this illness head on, I feel like we have all been put here to help

each other weather the storm. if ya ever want to talk or anything, I am more

then happy to do so. my personal e-mail, is hurracane@.... hang

in there, everything will be okay, take care of your self.

it sounds silly but i don't remember the type oif monitor i have and since i

live alone i can't even tell you just now but i do use the sure step with it

to assist in getting the blood on the pad. i have found that the last few

weeks i have difficulty in that my rigyht hand tingles like it is asleep. i

dont know if that is due to doing all the blood sugars or not. i have

decided that if i cant get it after trying three times at the most i will

just give up and hope that the next time i have better success. i ty ty

truly think that there has got to be a better way. i pray to god a lot

these days. love, karen

Hi :

This list is so good for people when they are feeling as you are because we can

be such a support to each other. If you like, I

could send you my phone number private E-mail and I would be very glad to talk

to you. Do you have unlimitted calling?? If you

would like to E-mail me off list, my addy is, gwmeuse@.... If you would

like to share your phone number, I could call you as

well. Living alone is hard at the best of times let alone when you are trying

to deal with things such as blindness and diabetes.

I don't like to give numbers on list, so if you would like, I will write to you

off list. Could you let me know? I would love to

be of any help I can be. Oh by the way . I think that you have your

caps lock on. It is not a problem to me but I

wondered if you knew? My sugar has been a little high for the last couple of

days as I have not been feeling very well. About

three days ago I started to feel a little queazy once in a while. I just kind

of shrugged it off as flu like symptems and didn't

think of it again. Then on Sunday the gland behind my left ear began to really

hurt and when I touched it, it was swolen. I have

to go for some blood tests but I mean this is silly. My doctor thinks I might

have the mumps. I mean, I ask you?!!! Couldn't I

think of something a little more dignified to come down with then mumps?? I

mean, !!really!!! So here I sit looking a little like

a chipmunk on one side. Snicker if you want guys. I already have been. There

really isn't any treatment accept the usual flu type

treatments. You know!!! Fluids, fluids, fluids, lots of rest, tylanall. etc

etc etc. Goodness knows where I could have picked

something like that up. Well I think I am going to call in who is doing

some weed eating outside since our lawn mower isn't

working, and see if he would like a nice cup of lemon tea. Doesn't that sound

yumnmnmnmnmnmnmnmnmnmnmnmnmny???

Kay, You sound very depressed. Is your doctor awaare how depressed you are?

Everyone-especially you-have a reason for living afteeer bad things happen.

When I went blind, I was 34 and had 2 children and a not very nice husband.

I truly thought of killing myself, but reason oveercame that as I had the 2

children, so I decided I would learn all I had to learn to be a successful

blind person and eventually go out and teach other blind people how to make

it over the hump of new blindness. I hate blood sugars more tha anything

else about the diabetes, but in order to keep as healthy as possible, I grit

my teath, swear some and do them. Give me your phone number and I will call

you. Communicating on E-mail is tedious!

I am getting a demonstration tomorrow afternoon of the Sof Tac meter. It

takes blood from your arm, deposits the blood on the strip and gives a

reading. It does not talk, but I think the display will be large enough for

my wife to read. If it works for me, my insurance will purchase it. I will

let you know what I think of it after I try it out.

Hi :

I have a one touch profile machine that I use all the time. There is a

voice box that you have to buy separately that plugs

in to the side of the machine. For the people that don't need the voice box,

that is the spot where they can plug it in to a

computer to print up all of the information that is stored in the memory. There

is a little bar called a sure spot that you can

slide on to the one touch so that it is easier to get the blood on the correct

spot on the strip. I have gotten used to not using

that little thing, as I find that when using it, you need a lot more blood then

you do if you don't use the little bar.

Anyways I am sure that I was just as clear as mud wasn't I? Well I am out of

here for now. gotta take a bit of a nap for a while

before my meeting.

Love and hugs, Wishy and Moka kitty.

Hi Rita:

I am sorry that I have taken so long to answer your message. I have been

reading The newest Harry Potter book for the last two days

and so did not get to my messages at all. The voice box that I have does not

work for anything other then the one touch profile I

am afraid. I wish that it did.

, I am not but I decided that I'd answer this question

anyway. In the states here there are departments of rehabilitation who

will send you to a place where you can learn how to deal with being

blind. I and all of my blind friends live on our own, including navigating

outside the house to go to the store, or shopping of any kind, to work--I

ran my own business for twenty years--to go to entertainment and many other

things. Contact The Department of Rehabilitation, LISTED UNDER STATE

GOVERNMENT, AND SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO FOR YOU. gOOD LUCK, lAwANDA At

Hi :

Yes sometimes it is very hard to get the blood on the strip. I do end up

wasting some of them once in a while. I do get out

a fair bit with my seeing eye dog Wishy. Most of the time I am with my husband

but that is only because he is unemployed at this

time, and we end up doing all kinds of errands together. Just keep up trying.

I am glad that you are trying to get out to walk

around your block. That is a very good start. Until you get some confidence,

do you have a friend that could come walking with you

so that you can get lots of excersise? I forget who suggested this, but the

idea of getting in to a rehab program to help you learn

skills that you have to know as a blind person is a good one. Just don't get to

depressed. I know that you are trying as hard as

you can. I wish that I lived closer so that I could come over and help but it

would be a very long walk indeed. Well good luck

.

Hang in there, . It is very tough when you fist loose your vision, but

it gets easier as yu learn how to do things. I think it is wonderful you

are willing to try the walk around the block. Put some sort of stoone or

brick at the edge of your driveway, so when your cane feels it, you know

where you are When I first started walking around the block, I counted the

number of driveways and after 22, I was home!

Hello,

Thought I would butt n and let you know about getting my first dog. I

applied to a school in CA in 1988. They came out and interviewed me and

after a few months, they let me know that I would start training in Oct.

1989. All the schools in America require that you live at the school for a

month-and I imagine the Canadian schools are the same. I now have my 3rd

dog. she is small black Lab named . I managed the diabetes the same

as I always did at home. You get a lot of exercise while at a school, but

there is alot of down time too-and they feed you well! Most of the schools

are more aware of diabetics being in class, so most of them have well

balanced diets and they always have extra food aroundin case of emergency.

The 2 schools I went too also have emergency buttons in the room to push if

you are ill-or low!

Re: testing blood

wendy could you give me a little history on how long u were in getting your

dog and the details about it? many thanks karen
