Guest guest
I would also put the horse on Tendon Ligament a Chinese herb formula available through Jing Tang in Gainesville (). It's in powder form, mix it into the grain. I have seen tendon injuries in horses heal in 50% of the time normally required and on my own MCL I took my brace off after 2 weeks and cancelled my 4 week recheck. Hanna Hannelore Geyer, DVMRossbach Farm Veterinary Services, LLD22108 Ruh RoadKiel, WI 53042hgeyer@... Any equine rehabbers out there? Anybody working with horses? My own horse tore his medial meniscus and medial collateral ligament (how ironic is that after all the extracaps that I do). Obviously, Securos doesn't make a crimp that large(he's 1150lbs.) Not a candidate for TPLO or TTA. I've started using ESWT on both the meniscal area and the medial coll. lig area. I intend to do 3 treatments of each and rest him for 3 months, since controlled exercise in the field is an oxymoron. My equine vet has given him a 20% chance of return to soundness. Any ideas? I'm contemplating using a laser(NOT a class 4) in between the shock wave sessions? Any takers?Meryl Lessinger, VMD. CVA,CCRT
Guest guest
Thanks for the help, Jill and Hanna, I've begun researching prolotherapy, although the folks on VIN are really nervous about it. I'll contact those people about the Chinese Herb powder. Have my fingers crossed. Happy New Year, Meryl Any equine rehabbers out there? Anybody working with horses? Guest guest
Hi Meryl, I work with horses and they love therapy!Therapeutic ultrasound and laser are going to be of extreme help.I have also used PST for this guys and they respond really well. Also there is a company based in California called VetStem. They have been working with stem cells for a while and it may be worth giving them a call.Dr Bob Harman is the director -super nice guy , great ideas.Dont forget to keep a close eye on compensatory problems that may come from that -horses are masters in compensating so the contralateral limb, diagonal anterior, back.Think whole! Let me know if you need any specifcs on parameters. Guest guest
Thanks, , I'm planning on the 2nd ESWT for his meniscus tomorrow and 2nd for his medial collatoral lig on Thurs. Still stall rested for 3 days post RX and then pasture turnout. I plan on a 3rd ESWT for each area 2 weeks later. Then I figure laser twice weekly for 2 weeks. I'll take your advice and watch for any compensatory soreness. He tolerates back massage fairly well. I know they use the stem cells for suspensory, but I'll call and find out if they have any experience with collat. lig tears. Thanks so much for your advice. Guest guest
By the way, how was the meniscal tear diagnosed? U/S? I saw a few tears that were very severe that were difficult to visualize except with U/S, and still the severity was difficult to assess. It was virtually impossible to see with arthroscopy. On the vet stem stuff, any ligament should theoretically improve. However, you can inject not only the ligament but also the joint. So far, I was hearing rumblings of early work that showed bone marrow derived progenitors were superior to the fat derived progenitors for intraarticular applications. Guest guest
Marti, Yes the meniscal tear, and the extent of the medial collateral lig damage, was diagnosed on u/s. Not being involved in this aspect of vet med, I'm assuming that the bone marrow derived cells are harvested from the affected animal, right? That's not my field of expertise in this species. I'll find out if my friend, the equine vet, has any experience with that process. Saw the horse take a couple of trot steps in the small pasture he's in and it made me feel ill. Hope he starts to get some improvement from the ESWT soon. I don't want to mix and match too many modalities, especially if some are more invasive. I agree with you about the arthroscopy. Evidently it's good for assessing articular cartilage damage but not so helpful therapeutically(at least that's what I was told) Thanks again, and Happy New Year Meryl Re: Any equine rehabbers out there?
