Aggressive Dog with Wobblers

Hi all,

I am working with a very aggressive 12 year old male neutered

rottweiler with wobblers. C4-5, C5-6 cervical vertebral instability,

cervical vertebral distraction-fusion 4/18/07. Prognosis: 50-70%

My question is not specifically with the rehab but managing the

aggression level. We started out with a traditional muzzle (and

Peace and Calming essential oil) and then progressed to a rubber

basket muzzle. At times it is impossible to even get the muzzle on

him even with treats. In addition to his therapy needs, he requires

frequent position changes and bladder expression. His owners

desperately want to keep him alive and want to help him.

His primary vet initially put him on pain meds thinking it was an

issue of pain control...without success. Then they put him on

prozac, again, no improvement.

Their vet recommended a " behavioralist " from their practice who is

teaching them clicker training. This may take weeks and weeks of

practice and frankly, we don't have weeks. I have recommended the

area's leading trainer who is an expert in dealing with large dogs

with behavioral issues.

Additionally, someone from the surgeon's office recommended an e-

collar. Of the 3 choices (muzzle, basket muzzle and e-collar), I

believe that this is the least safe method since he already has

fairly good head / neck mobility and control.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
