Guest guest
For those of you in Minnesota, can someone contact and see if you can help Chloe. Her contact information is at the bottom. Subject: request Hello Dr. Laurie, I was referred to you by Laurie Minarcik - we both belong to Midwest Border Collie Rescue, although she is in Illinois and I am in Minnesota. My 6 yr. old border collie female, Chloe, was diagnosed with arthritis in her hips when I adopted her at nine months. There is some hip damage that leads us to believe she had been beaten, and she had some behavioral problems back then that supported that speculation. Since I adopted her, she's been on glucosamine / chondroitin supplements (when she was younger) and then Missing Link Plus (for the last few years). My BCs go to a doggie daycare twice a week - my 10 yr. old maintains order inside the facility, and Chloe would work the yard. She focused on the fastest dog there that day, and would run behind it, going into the crouch when it stopped, always with a toy or stick in her mouth to keep herself from nipping. She's the dog who would hide when it was quiet time, because she didn't want to go in the building. She had blossomed into a happy little party girl from the scared, defensive young pup I had adopted. Last fall she suddenly went downhill. All of a sudden, the trainer couldn't get Chloe to go outside. All she wanted to do was curl up in a kennel. She got grumpy and would snarl if another dog got within a foot of her. At home her energy level was low. This was definitely not my dog. Chloe had a physical and her thyroid level was not normal. She is Thyro-Tabs, and we are still in the process of adjusting the amount. We hoped this was the reason for her lethargy, but nothing changed. My vet decided to x-ray Chloe's hips, and Chloe screamed when they lifted her to the table. The arthritis in the hips is now severe, but they also saw the beginnings of spondylosis deformans in her spine. However, the x-rays they took are not very good. I'm considering a trip to the UoM vet hospital for a more thorough examination. The first medication we tried was Zubrin. After three weeks, and at $3 / pill, I didn't see the results I thought I should. Chloe has been on MetaCam now for about 3 months, and she has good days and bad days. Sometimes I believe we are in sync with our arthritis - when she has a bad day, I feel it too. Laurie said that you offered to check a nationwide contact list where I could find alternatives for Chloe's care in my area (southern MN). I appreciate you taking the time to do this for me!
