B.F. Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior has provided professionals and parents with a conceptual roadmap for analyzing and treating language disorders. This workshop will begin with a brief overview of B. F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior, followed by a presentation of the most recent applications of the analysis to language assessment and intervention. The major focus will be on the use of a verbal behavior analysis to examine a number of common " language barriers " that often impede language acquisition. Participants will learn intervention strategies that may help to remove those barriers. This workshop will present the most recent strategies for teaching each of the elementary verbal operants (i.e., mands, tacts, intraverbal, etc.). In addition, a variety of topics will be covered over the two-day period, including behavior problems, how to set up a verbal behavior classroom and in-home program, staff training, automatic reinforcement, and the use of written words to facilitate language acquisition.
