Kassiane,

I have know idea how you do it but you never cease to amaze me. I have

no idea what an algorithm is or what kinesthetic means. I can add,

subtract, multiply and divide. Very little algebra. The most math I use

these days, (by the way, I'm nt and in my 30's) is when playing

cribbage!!! Maybe you could give me a lesson or two!!!

PS- Was always told the reason I suck at playing pool was cause I could

never get the concept of geometry. Go figure.

*blushes*

sorry I got so technical. An algorimth is the pattern you follow to, for

example, do long division (or anything else involving steps).

Kinesthetic has to do with motion.

Im really good at pool, but I was TERRIBLE at geometry on paper. I guess

that is more proof that I am very much a hands on learner =)

Dianna, it depends on the person.

I'm hyperlexic. Because of this, FOR ME, reading and then writing and

proper grammar structure came very easily. I memorized the rule system,

and then I experienced it in abundance in my reading. I do well with

rules paired with examples (also with hands on learning, but rule

corresponding with example works too).

Math is difficult for me, because I have a nonverbal learning disability

in addition to my autistic spectrum condition. I can straight-MEMORIZE

facts and formulas, but I cant always know when to apply them, or

understand the WHY behind it (example: WHY does 3 times 3 equal 9? Who

decided what the number 3 represents? et cetera...I got hooked up in

that aLOT).

Everyone has their strengths and their weaknesses. In general, it is not

a good idea to assume what these may be based on a diagnosis (unless of

course the diagnosis is a specific LD, like dysgraphia or dyscalcula.

Then its pretty obvious where a weakness will be, but not necessarily

the strengths)

Kassiane

3 x 3 = 9 because it is a short way of writing 3 groups of 3 objects is a total

of nine objects. To see that, put them in a grid formation.

it also helps to do this with things like 4 x2 and 2 x4

x x x x comes to 8

and

x x

x x

x x

x x is the same if you turn it around.

here, children do very little written maths until they are about 7. they use

manipulatives like shells, beans, pebbles etc and they do not do equations in

isolation. They are also encouraged to find several ways to solve each problem

so that they are not relying on rote learning.

We often develop maths problems from the childrens experiences so that they are

of great interest eg ayla had 16 50 cent pieces. how many different ways can

you use to find out how many dollars she has? This is appropriate for 5-6 year

olds.

Problems are always in context so that they have an understanding of what these

things mean, and that they understand that maths is a way of describing the

world. it is a language. this term i have had a child from usa in my class,

and he has been taught in a very restricted way, using only " maths " equipment

and a lot of rote learning. he got good marks at his school, but he does not

understand what he is doing. it is very sad to see him struggle and he needs a

lot of comforting to cope with having to do a problem more than one way. he

thinks this means he has got it wrong. :( he also thinks it is bad to get

things wrong. his teacher has not shown him how to look at a solution and see

how much he did right. :( this is not good teaching for problem solving and

creativity and it will particularly stifle very intelligent, unconventional

thinkers.

This is true. To play pool, you need good spacial awareness and an ability to

visualize and calculate angles and trajectories. pool is a highly mathematical

game.

ROFL they talked about algorithms....talk about timing *grins*.

I'm glad I could be of assistance, although I am not sure why I am a

peach, and not an apple or a grape or a kumquat....

Kassianne,

Had to write you again. Last night we went to our 2nd grader's open

house and guess what I learned? Yep, all about algorithms! Oh boy,

mother of the year am I!!

Thanks though, at least I had some clue what she was talking about after

your post yesterday! You're a peach.

Isn't that how the saying goes when you like someone, " oh, you're such a

peach " ? Well, as in changing flipping the bird to flipping the sparrow

how bout I say, geez Kassiane, you're such a watermelon!!!:)

I dig you.

Rhonda

PS - Do you mind being called Kassi or do you prefer Kassiane? Just

wondering

My dd is easily distracted by little things like fingernails, spots on ceilings,

a fly buzzing around, etc. I have alsways noticed that it happens more

frequently when she is feeling challenged by the work she is supposed to be

doing (so she stalls). If she is given work that she likes to do, she jumps

right on it and gets it done.

When i hit a blank in processing, it feels as if i have come to an abyss. there

is nothing there. it is a physical feeling. i have difficulty finding my way

back to the problem and that is when i get distracted. it is nothing to do with

being lazy or manipulative. i do not choose to have people annoyed with me at

all.
