Guest guest
Kathy, I'm a single mom, raised 3 sons; youngest (twins) are 19 now. A twin has OCD. Their dad wasn't involved at all after we split (at least not in a good way, LOL). > > I searched the topics but didn't see this out there at all. Guest guest
I had my children on my own, so they don't have a dad. Â Being the Only Parent I searched the topics but didn't see this out there at all. Are there any other single parents on the list? My daughters dad is only available via phone and see's her a couple times a year. Not much support thus far. Kathy gkathy40@...

Guest guest
Hi, Kathy. I'm not a single parent, but my husband works so much it often feels like it. Bless his heart, we sure need the money, because I have health issues and OCD can be spendy. I have family nearby, but they really don't get it, so aren't really much help. They care, just don't quite understand. And I even have a sister who has a son with OCD too. . . But, her son's OCD doesn't seem to be as intense as our son's. I know what you mean about needing a break. When things are really, really bad, where you are living minute to minute, it can be really tough to find a break. I found that I would try to get away, even for a few minutes. . Sometimes it was a matter of just taking a few extra minutes in the shower, to have my own little break down and regroup. Is there something that your daughter can use to distract herself so you can get a few minutes to yourself? Like our son has been known to use the computer or video games to distract from the thoughts, somewhat. If he could do that for even a half an hour, when he was struggling with his OCD, it would give me time to catch my breath. Another distraction for him was to have a friend over. Once he got past the clenched, white faced, in the fetal position, not eating or sleeping stage, and was a little more functional,. . A friend would come over and that would help distract him for a bit. Do you have any family members who might be able to help? It's hard to find, but getting a bit of time to yourself is so important. Guest guest
I'm not sure about other states, but I know in Oregon we have groups that do respite care for parents of special needs kids.....Like the Autism Society etc. You probably aren't in Oregon - but " Oregon Parent Training & Information Center " might have contacts in other states, or other resource numbers for you - their toll free number is 1-. I have gotten lots of info from these people, I'm sure they have info to at least get you a place to start for another state. Good luck, I've been where you are with the single parent thing - between the ages of 2 and 5 I couldn't take my son out in public and had to find ways to get shopping done etc ~ the one thing I constantly heard was " take care of you! " I hope you have a successful fruitful search!!!!!!!!!! from Oregon > > I searched the topics but didn't see this out there at all. Guest guest
I am a single parent also of a 9 year old son who has ADHD and OCD ( just recently diagnosed). His father is no where to be found and has not been for the last 7 years. I can not turn to my family as they always think that they are better than everyone else as it is. My mother is there for me though. There are times where I don't know what I do if it were not for my mother. Being the Only Parent I searched the topics but didn't see this out there at all. Are there any other single parents on the list? My daughters dad is only available via phone and see's her a couple times a year. Not much support thus far. Guest guest
Hi, I am new to this group. I am a single dad with two sons age 15 and 10. My 10 year old was diagnosed with OCD yesterday. In 2003 he was diagnosed with ADHD/PDD. I am HomeSchooling him as of December 2007. I hope to learn more about OCD and that with the new diagnoses, there would be a more effective approach to teaching him. Al > > I searched the topics but didn't see this out there at all. Guest guest
Welcome, Al. So glad you found us. We have a son 16, with OCD. We've homeschooled for 9 years. . Starting our 10th year next week (11th grade). It's been a blessing for us. There are some great books available that help to understand OCD. They helped me tremendously, to understand better what our son was dealing with. They are: What to do when your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by Aureen Pinto Wagner Ph.D. Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by Tamar E. Chansky Helping Your Child With Ocd: A Workbook for Parents of Children With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by Lee Fitzgibbons and Cherry Pedrick Talking Back to OCD by March The last two are workbooks that walk you through CBT and ERP. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), including ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) are the only type of therapy that is recognized as helping with OCD. Is there is something more specific you are curious about, regarding homeschooling? Please feel free to ask. There are many here who homeschool. Guest guest
Hi Al, welcome! I'm a single mom, 3 sons. Oldest is now 23 and then the twins (not identical) are 19. A twin () has OCD and Aspergers. The OCD is severe (bad thoughts type) and the Aspergers - well, mild overall I guess but still " there. " His OCD began in 6th grade, but began as physical type compulsions and rituals, didn't have the bad thoughts he currently has. Luckily he has done well overall regarding school grades (smart guy) but OCD really messed him up in school when it first began. Glad you found this group! > > Hi, > I am new to this group. Guest guest
I'm a single mom - have been since my daughter was a baby - recently joined this discussion area. We are just learning about OCD and trich - right now grappling with taking medication for the trich. Welcome! I'm very grateful for this group - esp being a single parent. Guest guest
My daughter has been on a variety of different SSRI's for her OCD and now she is on Anafranil, and none have helped her trich. Â If you find one that helps your daughter's trich, please let me know. Re: Being the Only Parent I'm a single mom - have been since my daughter was a baby - recently joined this discussion area.
