Guest guest
i've just bought the medisense soft sense glucose monitor, it does not have speech but you can download the results to a PC. it is painless to use as you can take blood from base of thum, or upper or forearmand you preload the machine with lancet and strip, place the machine on the part you choose and press a button. there is no problem with not getting blood on to the strip accurately and you don't get inaccurate readings! Guest guest
HI, Many monitors are completely free. Where they make their money is in the supplies needed to complete a blood sugar test, such as test-strips, the, um, oh heck, what are they called, OH, lancets, to poke your skin, y'know? Medicare will pay for some diabetic supplies, like needles and insulin, I think but they will not pay for supplies to keep your diabetes in check. If I think of resources, I'll comment more. Guest guest
Hi Sandy, I remember you from another list I think. As far as I know, there are not any organizations that buy that kind of equipment for diabetics. Kaiser insurance bought the only one I have ever had, the Freedom 2, and I had to fight with them to get them to do it. They wanted me to be insulin dependent before they would buy it, and I wasn't at the time. Good luck to you, sorry I couldn't help. This is true but depending on where you live, what local, state and federal programs you have, and what insurance you have, you can often get the test strips and lancets free too. If you want to give those details here maybe someone in your area or circumstances can offer suggestions but your best bet would be to ask your doctor for recommendations. Guest guest
LaWanda, Yes, I remember you from the weight watchers list. Have you done anything with WW? I sure hope this isn't a big fight, time will tell. Right now Rick isn't checking his blood sugar since we don't have a monitor. He told the doctor's nurse yesterday and if he had a problem with it to let us know and we haven't heard from him yet. Guest guest
The best time of the year to buy meters is November National Diabetic Month...also Walgreen Drugs has there own meter (made by someone else) that is nearly free...you should be able to get a meter for $20 after rebates at the most...they make their money selling you the strips. > We are looking at the accu-check voice mate glucose monitor. > Thank you so much wayne for suggesting this. Guest guest
Oh yes Medicare will too pay for supplies! That's how I get mine. I certainly couldn't afford them myself. You have to get a letter from your doctor, though, sent to the supply place that Medicare supports. I also got a meter from this same place. The doctor has to tell them how often you test to get the correct number of strips. I am not on insulin, but I bet they'd pay for that too. You get enough to last you three months at a time. visit the AnimalCommunicationsList http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AnimalCommunicationsList Checked for viruses by AVG version 6. Guest guest
Medicare *does* pay for testing materials? Yippee! I have constantly been told they don't. I've been listening to the wrong people, and letting the wrong things sink-in, as usual, it seems. Sigh. Thanks! Everett At 08:09 PM 12/7/2002, you wrote: >Oh yes Medicare will too pay for supplies! Guest guest
As a general rule, it isn't the monitor that costs so much money, it's the adaptive end of it that does. Case in point, I knew that I could get a monitor that doesn't speak for somewhere between $20 and $50, depending on the one I bought. The one I ended up getting, and only because it would talk, cost $700 and I'm glad that I didn't have to pay for it. LaWanda
Guest guest
, I am interested in the Medisense meter that you said you have purchased. When I asked my diabetic educator about a similar meter, she said she thought it might be difficult for a totally blind person to load the strip and the lancet. The company is supposed to send me some literature and a video but I haven't received it yet. Have you used the meter? Is it difficult to set up? Could a totally blind do it? I am using the Sure Step with the speech module and am doing fairly well with it but I am occasionally getting error messages. It sounds like this could be easy to use. help with expenses > > > > Hi all, > > Well, this is all so new to us and we are trying to get it all together. > > Are there any groups or organizations that will help with the expense of > > these items. > > We are looking at the accu-check voice mate glucose monitor. > > Thank you so much wayne for suggesting this. Guest guest
Medicare pays only 80% of strips, lancets, and meters. they will pay 80% toward a meter once in a 12-month period. Lilly has a program where you pay $12 for a 30-day perscription. If you have a good relationship with your doc, they just might have bottles of insulin to dispense for various reasons. I get Lantus 3 or 4 bottles at a time for a reason I am not clear on, but it may have something to do with it's relative newness and the interest in getting it out there. Not sure, but it doesn't hurt to ask. The Lilly pens btw are a good deal with the $12 Lilly program I forgot to say. Some states and counties allow for supplemental insurance with Medicare, but these are apparently few and far between. If you are fortunate enough to be able to have supplemental Medicare insurance, and the cost is much less than the amount of supplies you need, that's a good deal. Especially if you are interested in something like the Voicemate. I got mine 4 years ago or so when I had a supplemental package, and I paid 0 for what the paperwork stated cost around $900! While I'm at it, if you are interested in obtaining other perscription drugs for a very small co-pay, or usually nothing, go to www.needymeds.com and look up your particular drug(s). If your drug is listed, it means the manufacturer offers a medical assistance program for it to those who meet certain financial requirements. Your doc office may also have someone who works specifically with medical assistance programs. Oh, I forget, but if needymeds.com doesn't work, try .org. Guest guest
the meter is not too difficult to use, if you are reasonably dexterous you wouldn't have any problems. it's virtually painless to use! pity it does not have speech but if you have a pc, the pc programme works ok for uploading info from the device to the pc. you'd need sighted assistance to set the machine up initially for setting up the time and date functions and switching on the audible tones for errors etc. good luck! Guest guest
Sandy, MediCare wil pay for at least 80 percent of your glycose moniter and strips. If you have another insuracne such as mediCaid (called Medi-Cal in California), it will pay for the rest. Any health insuracne should pay for the machine with a doctor.'s perscription that states you are a diabetic and need to do blood sugars to moniter your progress or regulate insulin dosage. Sometime you have to really get aggressive with the insuracnce company, however! help with expenses Hi all, Well, this is all so new to us and we are trying to get it all together. Are there any groups or organizations that will help with the expense of these items. We are looking at the accu-check voice mate glucose monitor. Thank you so much wayne for suggesting this. The thing you didn't tell us was that we needed to rob a bank to buy it. LOL. So now we are trying to gather any info we can. I would appreciate any feedback.
