Guest guest
Hi, my name is . I am a 41 year old diabetic who has had diabetes for almost 40 years now. I went blind at 22, my kidneys failed on my 24 birthday and the transplant I had 2 weeks before my 25th birthday is failing now. With all that, my biggest complaint is neuropathy. It started in my feet at 19 and now I can barely walk sometimes because of my balance. recently my doctor said I might have sharko joint or something like that. I know I didn't spell that right. Does anyone know what that is exactly? If anyone can give me any info, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Ps. If you would like to email me privately, my address is: hudd@... or hudd61@... Guest guest
Hi , Below is an article I found discussing Charcot Joint. I also have diabetic peripheral neuropathy (dpn), but not, it seems, as bad as yours - yet. I noticed a small improvement in my dpn when I boosted my alpha-lipoic acid dosage from 600mg to 1200mg daily. Do you take alpha-lipoic acid at all? Are you doing anything about your dpn? I am just beginning a program of intensive antioxidant dosages which I found on the net several years ago. I plan to be on it for six months, reporting to the list on how things go. Hope this helps, Walt Charcot Joint Published in the March/April 1999 issue. A breakdown of the skeletal architecture of a joint. In people with diabetes, this condition most commonly affects the foot. Especially susceptible to Charcot joint are people with diabetes who have severe peripheral nerve damage. Because they have lost sensation in their extremities, they may not notice foot injuries such as a twisted ankle, a cut, or a blister on the foot. Recurrent abuse from infection or from putting weight incorrectly on the foot due to previous injuries can gradually damage the bones, joints, and ligaments of the foot, leading to Charcot joint. This condition may cause the foot or ankle to become warm, red, or swollen, and even to change shape. Doctors diagnose Charcot joint based on its appearance and sometimes with the aid of x-rays. People who develop Charcot joint must avoid putting any weight on the foot until it has healed and may even need to wear a cast while it heals. Afterward, they must wear special shoes that help distribute body weight away from the affected area. In some cases, the foot must be treated surgically to reconstruct it and restore its shape. To protect against Charcot joint, inspect the tops and bottoms of your feet every day. Be sure to let your doctor know if you have blisters or cuts, or if your foot or ankle appears red or swollen. Also, inspect your shoes often to make sure they contain no foreign objects, such as pebbles, which can injure the feet. This column is edited by S. Dinsmoor, a contributing editor of Diabetes Self-Management.
Guest guest
Hello, I hope you do not have Charcot's joint. It is deterioration of the joint and often requires surgery. Hopefully you can go to a podiatrist who specializes in diabetes. Also, as Walter says alphaliipolic acid may help, although your neuropathy sounds very advanced. Have you had any x-rays done of your ankle? Is it very swollen and inflexible Keep us posted on how you are.--- From: Huddleson Sent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 4:44 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: Welcome New Members Hi, my name is . Guest guest
Yes, it is inflexible and swollen. I also have pretty bad ostio perosis from prednizone for 16 years because of my kidney transplant. I have been to 3 different podiatrists. They all say something different. I would think that in a city this size, there would be some competent doctors. (I live in Denver). I have had problems with my left foot for about 2 years now. It is getting very frustrating, and my guide dog is getting fat. I already have special shoes, I call them my geriatric shoes. They seem to help a little, but not that much. Oh well, enough babbling. Guest guest
it sounds very frustrating, . maybe an orthopedic doc would be better. I don't think you have Charcots from what you said as it causes massive problems and has very distinct symptoms. Where is your guide from? Mine is from Guide Dogs of america in Sylmar, CA. My podiatrist just told me to keep on walking! The arteries in my feet are pretty calcified and I am having more pain and numbness because of that. I also wear those orthopedic shoes. At least as a man you don't look clunky in those shoes when wearing askirt! ` Re: Welcome New Members Yes, it is inflexible and swollen. Guest guest
I don't often wear skirts. <grin> My dog is from The Seeing Eye. He is a 7 year old lab/retriever mix who is a real nut. I feel really bad for him because I can't work him like I used to. Before all my foot problems, I used to walk 5 miles a day. Now he sits on my balcony and stares at the traffic going by. It's very sad. Welcome New Members > > > > > > > Hi to our new Members > > > > > > April you sort of know me from another list that we are both on. Ceshia > I > > you are new to me. Guest guest
Great, wayne. It always amazes me how such seemingly small thing can make life better! Guest guest
The doctor suggests I only do very low impact exercise. Like swimming or an exercise bicycle. The only problem with that is that I can't stand exercise for the sake of exercise, I want to go somewhere! Guest guest
I'm sure you feel bad about your dog, but remember, the most important thing with dogs is the fact they are with you! My lab is little girl about 55 pounds and shiney like a seal! I don't walk that far, but she seems happy with what we do. Has your doc suggested a tread mill to strength the ankle? Guest guest
Hi , How about listening to a book while bicycling? Would that work or you?
