Autumn, I was reading your post to and you mentioned s

pneumococcal titers. You said that checking the pre- and post- helped to

discover that he wasn't having as much trouble with the antibodies as

originally thought.

I'm very curious about this because doesn't seem to be making

pneumococcal antibodies and she's had THREE Prevnar vaccines, dozens of ear

infections and pneumococcal meningitis. The pneumococcal antibody failure is

the biggest reason the immuno's saying we might want to consider IGIV, but

I'm scared to jump into that because 's completely IgA deficient and I'm

afraid she'll have a bad reaction.

We're doing a fourth Prevnar next week (or when we're done with her current

double ear infection) and checking titers four weeks later, but EVERY time

we've checked the titers the stupid lab has neglected to do the pre- and

post-. The immuno didn't seem that annoyed with it, I think she said

something about maybe they didn't save the blood from before or something???

So I'm wondering if I should " demand " a pre- and post- vaccination profile

when we do the next round of tests in February??

Thanks --

on IGIV yet)

carol - they've sprayed some type of spray in the back of my throat before

when they've put in NG tubes. Might also work for the probe wires. I

believe its a lidocaine spray.

Kim,

We had pre & post antibodies run, both in separate profiles. So, we

got one set done prior to pneumovax & another set 6 weeks later. We

had another " post " done 6 weeks after that, which just happened to

coincide with 4 weeks after Prevnar.

I will warn you about our experience though. Every lab does things

differently and you may get some wild results. Autumn's test results

showed some response to a few of the antibodies & a DECREASE in some

of the other antibodies. Then, the second " post " was run through NJH

& they got some crazy results also. They are still rerunning these

antibodies to see if they made a mistake.

Make certain when your dr. orders the pre & post tests that they are

tested by the same lab. I know you've heard this before with other

blood tests, but I believe it is especially important with the

pneumococcal antibodie since there can be such wide variation.
