-- Question regarding Promethazine?

I would like to get some input from members of this group. My Mother has

been living with the Lewy Body diagnosis for a number of years, during

which I

have been a part of this group.

I am always concerned when the need arises for administering a new

medication , be it for cold symptoms or some other medical reason. She

is coughing

and the doctor has prescribed Promethazine. Has anyone had experience with

using this medicine for their LBD diagnosed loved one?

Can you please give feedback ASAP? Thank you very much in advance for your

help. Have a good and blessed evening.

Aida,

I don't have any experience with this medicine, but I did look it up in the

PDR - prescription drug reference. I would be very leery of it. The PDR

says that it is an antihistamine. It is prescribed for allergy, motion

sickness, nausea, vomiting, nightime sedation and pain relief. Promethazine

when combined with something else is used for colds and coughs. But under

warnings it says it should be used with caution if you have very low blood

pressure, Parkinson's and a whole host of other problems. Also under drug

interactions they mention of levidopa (sinemet). Just reading the info

sounded scary to me. Hope this helps.

Aida-

Promethazine (Phenergan) an antihistamine, which in your lo's case can help to

dry us secretions. However, I would be leary of using this medication in

someone with LBD. One of the side effects is it can cause uncontrollable

movements in the eyes, lips, tongue, face, legs and arms. It also can cause

increased dizziness and confusion. I have witnessed twitching of the

extremeities in young healthy pregnant patients, who I medicated with

intravenous Promethazine for nausea and vomiting. I would be concerned what

this medication could do to someone exhibiting Parkinson symptoms and the last

thing a LBD lo needs is increased confusion.

There is an over-the counter cough syrup that LBD patients can safely take. My

Dad took it without any problems. For the life of me, I can't remember the name

of this cough med. I checked with this group first prior to giving it to him

and I am sure they can advise you too. Along with this group, I have found my

local phamacist to be a great resouce.

One last thing, I always went slow when giving my Dad a new medication. When

possible, I cut the pill in half and then watched how it affected him.

I hope this helps.

Aida,

The medicine is Guaifenesin. Robitussin makes a syrup that contains

Guaifenesin, just make sure it's the plain Robitussin with not one

with letters after the name like Robitussin CF. Mucinex also makes a

pill that contains Guaifenesin. Guaifenesin is an expectorant which

means it loosens the congestion.
