BAAM CONVENTION NEWS

[1] BAAM 2005 Keynote Speaker: Murray Sidman

BAAM is pleased to announce that its 2006 opening Keynote Speaker will be Murray

Sidman. Sidman is well known for his pioneering research in avoidance behavior,

giving his name to one form of unsignaled avoidance now known as " Sidman

Avoidance. " He has been an instrumental figure in both basic and applied

behavior analysis, including contributions to autism and developmental

disabilities. He is author of behavior analysis classics: Tactics of Scientific

Research, Coercion and Its Fallout, and Equivalence Relations and Behavior: A

Research Story. Sidman will speak at 9 am March 23 in Eastern's McKenny Union

Ballroom. Open to registered attendees of BAAM.

[2] Special Guest Speaker: Randi, Randi Educational Foundation.

Randi, founder of the Randi Educational Foundation, will give a

special invited address, " Quackery and Health Scams in the New Millennium. "

Randi reveals how fake cures and subtle swindles ranging from homeopathy

to facilitated communication are more popular today than at any other time in

history, a fact that Mr. Randi views with great dismay. In this

thought-provoking lecture, Randi demonstrates how to avoid being taken in by

them. Randi is known for his $1 million challenge to scientifically demonstrate

the validity of paranormal claims. This lecture is tentatively scheduled for 7pm

Thursday March 23 in Pease Auditorium on the campus of Eastern Michigan

University. This lecture is free and open to the public as part of BAAM's 20th

anniversary celebration.

NEW BAAM FEATURES

[6] Behaviorist Bookshelf

BAAM has started postings reviews and information about new and classic books,

videos, and articles of interest to behavior analysts. Anyone may submit

reviews via BAAM's online submission system. In addition, BAAM has solicited

formal reviews of recent works from members of the BAAM community. Expect these

to appear periodically along with the self-submitted reviews. This BAAM feature

should be especially attractive to students who can get a little practice

writing and have a brief but creditable web-based publication to add to the

vita.

[7] BAAM FAQ

BAAM has started a new page of answer to " Frequently Asked Questions. " Like the

Behaviorists' Bookshelf reviews, anyone may submit a FAQ (both the question and

the answer) via the BAAM " Suggestions Page. " If this feature proves popular, we

will add a submission page specific to FAQs.

[8] Behavior Movies

With expanded server capacity, BAAM is experimenting with movie delivery. Right

now we have just one movie: " Kramer the Rat " shows us what schedule-induced

drinking looks like. If this system works well, we will expand with other video

offerings. You will need Apple's Quicktime to view the movies. Quicktime is

already installed on most Macintoshes, but might have to downloaded from Apple

if you have a Windows machine.
