Guest guest
Hi I have just cooked some SCD biscuits and have realised that the nuts expiry date was July 11 – do you think it is okay for my son to eat them OR is it best to throw them away? I was storing them in a plastic bag in the pantry and they had been opened about 2-3 months? Would really appreciate some advice? Guest guest
Dear NicolaThe good thing with nuts is that it is easy to smell if they are becoming rancid... I would be most worried if the nuts were peanuts as I understand they are more prone to the nasty toxic things when out of date. If you still have some nuts in the container.. smell the container and see if there is any signs of a nasty smell .. if not, I think you may be ok to use them.In Africa we did not have best by dates.. so had to learn visual and olfactory ways to check for food safety... and this is the route I tend to follow.. without becoming attached to best by dates.. Best WishesTracey Hi I have just cooked some SCD biscuits and have realised that the nuts expiry date was July 11 – do you think it is okay for my son to eat them OR is it best to throw them away? Guest guest
Nicola, Throw them out. Once nuts are shelled they become extremely rancid fats and thus quite toxic. Tracey is right in that smelling is a good test however many people do not have good olfactories ( Hi I have just cooked some SCD biscuits and have realised that the nuts expiry date was July 11 – do you think it is okay for my son to eat them OR is it best to throw them away? Guest guest
but all nut flours have been shelled weeks before... > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >  > > > > > > > > > > Hi > I have just cooked some SCD biscuits and have realised that the nuts expiry date was July 11 †" do you think it is okay for my son to eat them OR is it best to throw them away? Guest guest
Yes, this is one of the problems with nut flours. I buy whole nuts, shelled, but keep them in the freezer until ready to use. Then soak to remove phytic acid, dry, and put through a food processor to make flour. Keep that in the freezer or fridge too. If you're not eating a lot of the nut flour, then it's not a huge problem. But if a good chunk of the diet is nuts, then of course it can be a big problem, esp for our kids.
