Guest guest
An interesting thread and thought I'd chime in. I do home visits and have always worn business casual I guess you'd call it. I wear cotton, washable clothes with khakis in warmer weather, I might wear capris in hot summer, and tops with sleeves (more a personal preference as I don't like the jiggle and hang of my upper arms )and in fall/winter wear corduroy pants/jeans and sweaters. Often remove my shoes also. I found Dee's rationale for more casual clothing interesting and add to this the advantage of grey/white hair which gives me the appearance of the granny who passes on what she knows (albeit research-based). Once I had a mom tell me that because I wear my long hair tied up she initially thought I was quite severe looking and wondered about my philosophy, but when her husband picked up something from my house and saw my husband's ponytail he told her I couldn't be that "straight!" That cracked me up and I told her I wear my hair up so it's not in the way when working with mom/baby. I also find pants helpful as opposed to skirts because of bending over or the occasional crawl onto the bed to help moms with positioning. Age and experience has made me more laid back and I take my cues from the family as to need for humor, hands on, hugs when all are so uptight--it works.
