Niacin(B3) is one of the most effective for raising HDL and improving LDL quality, VLDL, and IDL. Red Wine, 5-10 oz a day max, can dramatically improve HDL and the alcohol improves blood thinness lowering a chance of blood clots and consequently stroke and heart attack. I recommend he take a VAP test which will give feedback on HDL and LDL subtypes, actually measure the amounts, and give feedback on VLDL, IDL, and partial cholesterol particles. If he has small particle LDL, a statin will not improve it, niacin would be the choice. > Is anyone here currently taking this drug? Are you having any of the > side effects I'm worried about? Taking 15 to 25 grams of mixed fibers can lower LDL substantially AND increase HDL. There are other choices for lowering LDL, improving LDL and HDL quality, increasing HDL, etc. -- Steve - dudescholar1@... " Knowledge of the world has its roots in those who dare to be different. Guest guest
Red Rice Yeast is the same as taking a statin, same side-effects. I just got a call from my doctor's office with the results of my lipid profile taken on Tuesday. For the first time in 6 years of trying, I've been able to get my Total Cholesterol under 200 without a statin!! Believe me I have tried individual things and many, many combinations. My latest disappointment was the policosanol. It just didn't work for me, at least not by itself! My normal diet Cholesterol is usually about 240+- and I think I finally found the key. Fiber - lots of it!!!! My last panel taken the first of August was 228 with an LDL of 139. This time my total was 196 with LDL at 108 (the lowest ever)!!! I still took the same supplements that I took to get it to 228 which were: policosanol, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, 500mg of Slo-Niacin, and 1gram of Inositol Hexiniacinate. But this time in addition, I added one apple a day, 6 grams of pysllium powder, 4 grams of Inulin (2 FiberChoice Tablets, which were very tasty and new on the market), and increased my exercise to 40 minute walks a day. I ate at least 30 grams of Fiber a day, everyday! Ate very little sugar, very little red meat and NO trans fats. I eat Oat Bran with ground flax seeds for breakfast with Heart-Wise Orange Juice, a low-carb, high fiber tortilla with either fat-free cheese or peanut butter and jelly for lunch followed by an apple. For dinner I have a salad, some meat which is usually chicken but can be beef or pork and a cooked veggie or two. Usually before lunch I drink 8 oz of water with a little juice in it for taste in which I dissolve the pysllium. I eat the Fiber Choice Tablets after supper. I am so HAPPY with my results I could shout from the roof tops.....can't wait to see the doctor's face on Monday when I go....he thinks I'm still on the Pravachol!!!!!! Anyway....here's the complete results: TC 196 LDL 108 HDL 79 Triglycerides 47 Last time they were TC 228 LDL 139 HDL 68 Tri 102 and when I was taking the Pravachol they were TC 193 LDL 98 HDL 68 Tri 129. When he put me on the Pravachol they were TC 247 LDL 154 HDL 72 Tri 106. Thanks for listening and hope it helps someone.....like I said I've spent 6+ years trying to get it down naturally. Noreen New here, looking for Crestor info Hi, Since my husband has just been introduced to a statin because of high cholesterol (239), it prompted me to do some research on it. He has been prescribed 5 mg of Crestor daily. Needless to say when I did a search on Crestor, I became very upset. He has also recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I'm guessing he has been prescribed this medication because the dr. wants to get his HDL back up, currently at 34. Is anyone here currently taking this drug? Are you having any of the side effects I'm worried about? His endocrinologist prescribed this for him 4 days ago and I'm thinking of having him change the prescription. He is an otherwise healthy 53 year old male. I'm very worried about the side effects of this drug! Then I ask myself, if it's so dangerous, why isn't the FDA pulling it? Is it less dangerous just taking 5 mg a day? A neighbor recommended taking Red Yeast Rice pills....anyone here take those? All this statin stuff is frightening, though I must say I know quite a few people who have been taking Zocor for years and haven't had any problems. LDL HDL Triglycerides Has his doctor checked these risk factors? - homocysteine - hs-CRP - Lp(a) Crestor is the strongest statin on the market. And yes, all statins are frightening. Red Yeast Rice is a statin and can produce all the same side effects as prescription statins. My husband took RYR and had the same side effects as he did with Lipitor; muscle/joint - pain/stiffness, cognitive decline, moody, depressed, eye disorder (amaurosis fugax) , just to name a few. Type 2 diabetes can usually be controlled with proper diet and exercise. What is your husband's glucose level? Fran

Guest guest
I had no problem taking 10 mg Lipitor, when it was boosted to 20mg I had problem. When I took Crestor a year later, it was 10mg, they weren't selling a 5mg pill then. My reaction to 10mg Crestor was horrendous. Be very careful. --- Valarie wrote: > Hi, > Since my husband has just been introduced to a > statin because of high > cholesterol (239), it prompted me to do some > research on it. Guest guest
Yes, Jillie.....I'm still really thrilled with the results. Having blood drawn 3-4 times a year and trying one thing and then another was getting quite depressing since the results weren't changing much and then this!!! The HDL is probably high due to the cinnamon, fish oil and exercise. At least thats my guess. The lower LDL was definitely the fiber and the fact I went back to real orange juice, but 90%mostly the fiber. Being on an almost no-sugar diet lowered the triglycerides and usually when they lower, the HDL goes up. They are usually inverse of each other. I just can't wait to see my dr's face.,.....I'm so glad I quit the Pravachol and tried this one last thing!!!!! I quit it after only 3 weeks because I could not sleep. Guest guest
Yes, in April of this year it was 9.1. I know take a B-100 in the morning and one in the evening along with my multi in the hopes it will come down some before he checks it again next year. They are two different brands and one also contains betaine. Noreen Re: New here, looking for Crestor info Hi Noreen, Excellent results... Just one comment: Has your doctor checked your homocysteine? Guest guest
I am so glad you finally got something that works for you. I know there are differences in the types of fiber we get. Do you know if taking the benifiber would be the same as the fiber tablets? I can put that in his coffee. I can't get my husband to take one more pill, but will try to get more fiber into him. I also have to watch for diarrhea with him. Did you have any problems when you increased your fiber? I also considered trying to add the policosanol. We get it in the margarines we use, but I think you can get pill form too. I put regular cinnamon in our coffee in the morning. Do you think this works just like the pill form? He can't take the niacin. Here's what we do right now. Multi vitamin Fish oil/ 2000 mg per day b complex W/C cinnamon I add flax and rice bran whenever I can. I take psyllium because the other fibers do not seem to work for me. I have ibs and am hypothyroid. We do mostly fish and chicken, and I am trying to cut out as much prepared food as possible. All whole grains. Do you eat the skins on the apples? I have found in the last few years that the skins are so tough and bitter, I can barely stand to eat them.
