Guest guest
Hello, I'm new here and to autism, and feeling out of depth on the whole supplement maze. But the big thing this week is I started giving my son a calcium supplement a few days ago due to cf diet, and things have become awful: biting and chewing everything in sight, ripping up books and masticating paper, laughing maniacally, pressing eyelids and groping around with eyes shut etc etc. Is this the calcium? I don't know what else to blame and will discontinue. But if calcium supplements are bad how else is he to get the stuff? I don't want to reintroduce dairy because I'm pretty sure it exacerbates his eczema. Thank you for any ideas Zoe
Guest guest
Dear ZoeThere are lots of natural sources of calcium through foods other than dairy.. in fact the calcium in Dairy is the least well absorbed form of it.. If he is reacting and it appears to be linked with the calcium supps, then stop the supps... My children are all lactose intolerant and have never had dairy nor supps... they are fine...,my health visitor told me that there was more calcium in carrot juice then milk.. not sure if this is true,... though it did make me feel a whole bunch better. Guest guest
My son cannot tolerate calcium supplementation either, absolutely ripping! Natasa will probably chime in here as she knows so much about this issue with many of our children. There are other sources of calcium, my son is 14 is pretty much CF most of his life and is growing just fine now without supplementing. Guest guest
Buy " The Calcium Lie " book- an eye opener and excellent explanation of biochemistry in very easy to absorb language. According to the author calcium should never be taken as a supplement, it should come from food. Kasia > > Hello, I'm new here and to autism, and feeling out of depth on the whole supplement maze. Guest guest
Yes, my son also regressed badly on calcium. It seems a good number of kids cannot take it at all in supplement form, of those who can most do well on calcium/magnesium combo, rarely calcium on its own. Interestingly that in many cases poking of eyes STOPS when kids are put on calcium sups (those who were not on it before), so looks like a balancing issue.Yes don't worry too much if son is not taking calcium from milk, most kids in Asia don't drink milk at all and grow fine without it. There are lots of foods rich in calcium, whitebait (any small bony fish), broccoli, almonds... best google the lists. You can also try goat's or sheep's milk and products at some point (or camel milk, available in UK now!!), some kids tolerate those fine. Guest guest
Nathasha, you mention camel milk. Are you aware of anywhere other than London where this can be bought. I've been looking at this for a while as my son is dairy free. Camel milk is high in lactoferrin and supplementation of lactoferrin has made a huge difference to him. Guest guest
have a look on http://camelmilkuk.net/ for suppliers (the ones listed for South London are no longer there, so others could be inaccurate as well)> > >> > > My son cannot tolerate calcium supplementation either, absolutely> > ripping!> > > Natasa will probably chime in here as she knows so much about this issue> > > with many of our children.> > > There are other sources of calcium, my son is 14 is pretty much CF most> > > of his life and is growing just fine now without supplementing.> > > Vicky> > >> >> > > >>
Guest guest
Hello! My son is also GF/CF diet.I am always worried about his ca levels. In fact ca was low in the urine test despite the supplement.WE used Kirkman's liquid one for many years. In the last 7-8 months, I am giving him Sango Calcium..The Dr recommended. There are other elements in it such as Chrom and Molybodn..It is difficult to read, it is in German. It is distrubuted via Natural Power Europe. However it is not easy to order online because of the language for me.. My son looks fine on that but I don't know how much this supplement makes a difference.. Nevin > > Hello, I'm new here and to autism, and feeling out of depth on the whole supplement maze. Guest guest
Wow! What a lovely group. Thanks for all your replies. You've even made cf sound exotic and entitcing (carrot juice! camel milk!. Things are immediately a lot better today: eye poking has stopped, and less chewing. I'm about to ask about that in another thread. Zoe > > Hello, I'm new here and to autism, and feeling out of depth on the whole supplement maze.
