Guest guest
Hi Sophie, I am a Belgian mum with a 15th year old boy with autism, I should say it all depends in which degree his autism is bottering him, my son is only mildly autistic and I always combined school and therapy after hours or at home (in the weekend or after school). Of course, it depends also for a great part on the willingness of the school/teacher, what are they prepared to do for him ? Is there a special caregiver at the school who can assist if things go wrong ? All important things to consider, the most important thing however is to stand by your child every stap of the way, teach him things at home, I did this from the age of 3 untill now and will have to do this for a couple of more years I believe. I learned him how to write with a pencil, coloring between the lines, how to make friends, how to discuss something with your friends, adding other food to his menu and a many, many more things, too much to tell. SHOW THAT YOU BELIEVE IN HIM (was very important here)!, arguing with school principals why he should NOT be in a special school. I did all this and I don't regret one bit of it, it is hard but rewarding work. Look at your child and decide for yourself if he would be able to manage in regular school with your help and the help of teachers and some help at home, if so, go for it and give it try. If it doesn't work out, your mummy feeling will tell you what is best for your child, that's my opinion.
