Guest guest
Thanks for all your responses. Sorry to hear you've got similar issues Natasa xx > > Our paed is suggesting we trial this. Does anyone have any experience with it for their child? It didn't work for my mother in law, or brother in law but I wondered if anyone had had good experience. I don't think his incredible stress levels can be helping his well being or digestion. He's gained weight from being on risperidone but the effects of that are definitely wearing off. It feels like a very adult drug for a boy who may be almost 13 but is physically only about 11! > > I'm not anti prescription meds at all, it just feels like a big step. > > Any experience? > > Steph >
Guest guest
I have ASD my self and I regressed and got much worse after taking prozac.. Hadn't had any anger issues earlier but had lots of melt downs while taking prozac. Dropped out of school, lost all my friends ++.. So for me prozac didn't help at all. I also lost language after a while.. Karianne 20 years.. SCD/LOD > > > > Our paed is suggesting we trial this. Does anyone have any experience with it for their child? Guest guest
Whether Prozac or any other SSRI is likely to be of benefit depends on the baseline functioning of the serotonin pathway. If someone has high serotonin levels to start with it can cause problems as sounds likely in Karianne but if they have low levels it can be of benefit. You need to check first (poor sleep anxiety and motor issues can be a good indicator of likely benefit). There is a large literature on this stuff. Let me know if I can be of help/direct you to relevant references.Ken. Guest guest
Ken please DO post if there is a 'quick and easy' guide on how to pick the righ med Esp interested in how you would guess a child needs an NRI (or an antiadrenergic?) instead of an ssri, what would be the symptoms/indications. Is there anything in patient history to indicate which way to go? Hearing from other parents who have tried various ssri there is no way of telling which one will work in each individual case (if at all). Say someone can reactive negative to prozac but do very well on celexa, or do badly on celexa but see life changing benefits from zoloft etc. Also dosage usually plays a role, just tweaking it up or down can make a big difference.
