Hi Arlene, welcome to the list. My name is LaWanda and I live in

Sacramento, CA, with my husband and no children. I was diagnosed with type

II diabetes when I was 35 years old and I have been a diabetic for over

eighteen years. So far I haven't suffered too much from the disease, but I

am taking just about every medication that exists. Unfortunately I haven't

been a Jaws user for long so I can't help you with your problem, but I am

sure that someone else here probably can. We are a pretty supportive bunch

of people and you should feel free to just jump in and ask any questions

you want to ask. Again welcome to the list, it's good to have you

here. LaWanda At 10:48 PM 7/25/03 -0700, you wrote:

Greetings Arlene,

Firstly, welcome to the list, I've only been subscribed a few months and

have found the posts of great interest and not a little help!

Please can you tell me, is your husband Spannish? for my speech synth makes

Vasquez

sound like a spannish word.

As for me, I'm a type2 diabetic, having been discovered in 1999 but I

suspect I've been that way for a good many years. As I reach the grand old

age of 54 tomorrow, I suspect it's the usual age-related cause.

Yesterday, I went for a foot inspection and though I am aware of slight

loss of sensitivity in parts of the foot, the lady thought as I was fully

aware, provided I keep taking note and am careful, I should be ok. I'm

going back on 4 August to have further more thorough checks.

She asked me had I been seen by an eye specialist to look into the back of

my eyes and check the blood vessels. When I said no, can't remember when

my eyes were last checked, she was somewhat aghast. Thinking about it, I

don't think they've been checked since I left college in 1970 so that's a

good 33 years ago.

Ok, that's enough from me for now.

Cheers.

Colin R. .

Hi Arlene.

You have to type your messages in notepad and then paste them into the yahoo

compose message and then send it. You can't type a message in the yahoo web

interface, jaws won't speak to you what you are typing. I signed up for the

yahoo premiere email service for $19.99 a year that lets you check yahoo

email via outlook express since jaws works great with that program.

I'm also new to the list and wanted to say hello to all. I mostly lurk and

read since my schedule is quite filled these days. I'm 31 and have been a

type 1 diabetic for 25 years. I've got a lot of new information, or new to

me that is, to share with all to see if anyone on the list has encountered

the concept of carb counting to manage diabetes. I'm finding that prior to

carb counting, my sugars bounced all over the place and now prior to each

meal, I average a blood sugar of 110 to 116 after years of never maintaining

a close sugar count. I'd like to chat about carb counting with everyone so

will post a topic on it today. I'm glad to be on the list and am looking

forward to meeting other blind diabetics whether they are type 1 or type 2.

best wishes,

Welcome to the list, Arlene

In order respond to an E-mail, all you have to do is " control-R " and an edit

note will come up. You write in your response and hit alt-s. I am a type 1

diabetic-since I was 22 months old and now 60. I just retired from working.

Thursday was my last day and I feel rather weird not having to think of

work! I have had by-pass surgery, but the kidneys are okay and the

neuropathy is mild in my hands and feet. I have a guide and live in Temple

City, CA, which is outside of Pasadena. Keep in touch.

Hi,

my name is Arlene and I have been a diabetic for 38 years. I was diagnosed

when I was 2 1/2 years old. when I was 20 I lost all of my vision in less

than six months. I live in Washington state on Whidbey island. right now I

don't get out much due to physical limitations. I have a yahoo email

address which is superblindwoman@..., but am having trouble figuring

out the email program with my speech access.

I can read emails, but I am having trouble with responding to and composing

emails. I use jaws 4.25. if anyone

can help me figure this out I would be grateful.

I am married and have no children I am not really sure what you would like

to know. this is the first email group I have ever belonged to. if there

are any other things you would like to know, if I can answer it I will.

Hello,

I too have been lurking in for the last few days just to see where I fit in.

My husband was injured in 2000, has had 7 surgeries on his right hand and 1

on his left. He is

now disabled at 48 and has chronic pain and rsd on his right hand. It has

been awful. It is

difficult for him to zip, tie his shoes, button, carry anything over 5 lbs

he is not able anymore.

We are fighting work comp like everyone else and for 3 years the social

security system (which is a

joke). Work comp and social security system will make a sane person crazy.

Just more stress

in a bad situation.

He is fighter, and wants to work but is unable to. I just want my old life

back, sad isn't it. I am

in the medical field so that helps somewhat.

His hands are in constant pain, he is good about taking his meds. We are

trying a new drug

and praying it works.

My family lives in another state and my husbands family one mile from me

is a joke. So all I have is my 2 boys. My

oldest is getting married in one month.

I don't talk about him with my co-workers unless someone asks. It is

ovewhelming half

the time and I now realize the stress and toll it has taken on my health and

I am only

46.

So thanks to all of you, I now know I am not alone or out of my mind.

Hugs, Gayle
