Thanks for the suggestions larry.I am currently taking the 150 b-complex and adding brewers yeast to my diet, but perhaps need to look at adding additional niacin. my c-reactive protein is in normal range but my homocystine was very high (12.7). it has now lowered to 6.1. I went out and got some additional coEnzyme Q10 last nite(after reading all the positive information it seems like a good move). My only reservation with adding additional niacin is interaction with the other meds. I tried taking red rice yeast extract and felt very poor.so I stopped after 3 weeks. perhaps a conflict with the zocor I was taking at the time?My goal is to get off the lipid meds all together due to the obvious risk. I have made some pretty drastic life style changes. My body has changed alot...I dont know what changes to attribute to what. The first four weeks my body was withdrawling from nicotine, caffine, sugars, poor nutrition.Steve

Hi, Steve,

My husband was taking Red Rice yeast also, and was getting sick -I did some research , and it's the same base used for the statins, only in lower concentrations , because it's an herb and not a drug . I am permanently damaged due to the statins, so I research everything now ...

I think I read somewhere that red rice yeast is chemically similar to the statins, so probably not a good idea. More info, anybody?Linden

1. Excercise at 65-75% max heart rate for 30 minutes a day. In your

case make sure doctor is OK with intensity.

2. 1 glass of wine a day

3. 1000 mg or > or Niacin.

Looks like you are doing very well and following all the basics. HDL

unfortunately is hard to increase. My base was 40...and with

excercise, diet, alcohol...I have never been higher than 48, over

the last 10 years. I am trying 1000mg Niaspan currently and will

post results sometime in January. Fortunately there is increased

research in this are, and hopefully treatments are around the corner.

Hi Steve,

Some thoughts:

Certain people, me for instance, can't get their HDL up on a

super low-fat diet unless they take a drug or a lot of niacin. If

you're determined to go natural, you may be better off with a low

saturated, moderate monounsaturated, fat diet. But your history of

low HDL, even when other lipids were high, makes me wonder if it'll

be enough.

Berkeley Heart Labs does a great job of testing people for all

kinds of cardiac risk factors and then offering treatment and diet

recommendations. They're at www.berkeleyheartlab.com Their site has

some good info and they'll work with your doctor.

In spite of what your doc might say, I think they're the

best. They often discover problems and suggest remedies that your

typical cardiologist would have missed. They probably saved my life.

Steve...what is your family heart history?

You seemed to have been a good weight and your glucose levels were

fine.

Any nutritional reasons for the high tryg and total?

Did you eat/drink lots of carbs and processed sugars?

I would also consider more fish oils, make sure they are high

quality......

Possible Drug Interactions:

Do not combine Red Yeast Rice with prescription

cholesterol-lowering drugs.

I tried taking red rice yeast extract and felt very poor.
