hello my name is shane, and I have been on this list for about three days or

so, I am 26 and in December, was diagnosed, with type two diabetes, I am

currently taking glucofage sorry not sure of the spelling, anyway I am

taking it three times a day. I am new to the diabetic scene, and quite

frankly a bit scared at times, I am working on a wait loss program, I have

increased my working out, and I swim walk, and have changed my eating

habits. I am open to hearing experiences, from others because I believe it

will help me, with my fight against this, I am totally blind and have been

since birth. I think the biggest thing I miss, is the sweets, smile, its

been six months and I have not had one ounce of anything sweet, I still eat

bread and stuff, its a little harder to get totally away from that, but

sweets have been thrown away, if I need sweetener on a cereal or something I

use stivia, and it works good for me, well sorry, about rambling so long,

just wanted to give you a bit of a background on me, take care all and I

look forward to talking with all of you.

Hi Shane,

Welcome to the list. Itt's good to hear from you, and also to hear a new

subject line. lol.

Shane, if you are not already familiar with this resource, there are some

items for blind diabetics, on the www.nfb.org Web site. Follow the links

for Diabetics or Diabetes, and there are two things I am pointing out here

for you if you don't already know. 1. The free subscription magazine

called the " Voice of the Diabetic. " It's a resource and support mag,

for thos experiencing complications from their diabetes, and for those

that are diabetic and blind. And, 2. There is a long list of suppliers of

equipment for the blind diabetic. all kinds of equipment to help you

manage your diabetes independently, if you wish to. They are both

available to you, by following the diabetes links, at www.nfb.org.

My name is Everett. I'm 33, and have had diabetes since I was 10.

I''ve been blind now for the past 10 years, due to Diabetic Retinopathy.

I live in Northeast Ohio, in the USA.

Welcome to the list!

Hi Shane and welcome to thte list. I don't blame you for being a little

scared of this disease that we all have, it can be scary, but it can be

lived with pretty easily. As far as missing sweets is concerned, there are

things out there than can be used, in moderation, to satisfy the sweet

tooth, even sugar free chocolates that taste really good. Good luck with

your lifestyle changes, sounds like you are on the right

track. LaWanda At 06:31 PM 6/6/03 -0700, you wrote:

Shane, Good luck and hang in there. I am also totally blind from birth and

57 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes late last year. I, too, have

worked hard on losing weight and exercising. I lost about forty pounds by

giving up sweets and eating smaller portions of things I enjoy and doing a

lot of walking. I recently lost a lot more weight by being in the hospital

for two weeks because of surgery. You'll never gain weight on hospital

food, that's for sure. (smile). I was also on nothing by mouth for more

than a week so that took weight off. But now I can afford to put some on,

which isn't all bad. As others have said, there are lots of things out

there to satisfy your sweet craving with sugar. Blue Bunny icecream with no

sugar added is excellent, but watch serving sizes. Lots of good sugar-free

candy, too. I've also had good success with using Splenda if I want a

little in my tea. My wife has also cooked with it in desserts. I've even

learned to like diet soda. Are you testing your blood sugar and if so how

is that going? I still need help with that, but my readings, when I can get

them, are always good. It sounds like you are dealing with this with a

positive attitude and a good outlook. You are taking it seriously and I

think you will succeed.

hello john, thanks for that and thanks to all who are supporting me in my

fight, I call it a fight because plain and simple I love to eat, maybe a bit

to much but eating used to really be my thing, when I was in high school, I

always went between 260 and 280 lbs. because I was on the school wrestling

team, I always kept my weight leveled, then I graduated, and some how

keeping the weight down became harder, working out was not as accessible,

and it kept growing, I use to be 440 lbs, I am now down to 360 or so,

maybe a bit more or less. its a hard fight, because the only diet I have

been good at is the sea food diet you know, you see food you eat it, now I

am totally blind but I can assure you I could smell food from a mile away,

smiles. but when this happened, I did get serious with it, and started

trying to cut out the things I am not allowed to have any more. I have

discovered diet sodas some are good some are not so great I also discovered

Snapple diet of course and crystal light tea, which is good, now I guess my

question is the snacks you can have, like sugar free candi, I was told that

some have fruit ose in them so I could not " eat at will " if I eat a piece or

two of sugar free candi what food during the day should I give up, I know

in my mind, I feel some times like the weight is a never ending issue, if we

are shooting for honesty here, I hate being fat, I hate wondering if my

pounds are coming off or not, and since I am not Harry potter with a magic

wand I know the only way its coming off is with hard work and determination.

any way just a few thought from me, thanks all for listening.

Hi Shane,

I joined this list because I need to drop a lot of weight. Not diabetic

yet and hope to prevent this.

I am on the Atkins diet.

Exercise is what I need to do more. Have a recumbent bike but need to set

a regular schedule I guess.

Cutting the carbs and sweets should do more for you than anything

Shane. I agree, the sweets are a lot easier to get rid of than the

carbs but you really need to do this to control your blood-sugars and

save your long term health. We can tell you from first hand

experiance that they do not exaggurate when they tell you of the

damage that diabetis will do if not controlled.

Hershey has come out with some great sugar-free candy. I especially

like the Reese's Pieces, which taste like the real ones.

We have switched to the Diet Rite sodas, which have ZERO carbs,

sugar, caffeine, sodium, protein, fat and calories. It is made with

Splenda. I like to mix the White Grape and Red Raspberry 50/50.

Sounds like you are making progress. Stick with it!

Hi Shane:

I have been away from this group for a little more then a week so I have not had

the chance to welcome you to the group. It sound

as if you are doing a really great job. I know what you mean about the see food

diet. I followed that diet for years.

hehehehehehehe!!! It has been the biggest struggle of my life. I can remember

me being on a diet of some kind or other since I was

about eight years old on my mother's insistance. It didn't seem to matter what

I weighed, it was always to much. I have always

had a really negative additude towards dieting so now I just call it a change in

life style. Just keep up the good work and you

will do fine. I have found that some of the diet drinks and candies are good

and some are not. You have to find someone who is

willing to do some label reading for you.

Hugs, Wishy and Moka kitty.

Faith, the final frontier...

These are the voyages of the human race; whose continuing mission is to trust

God in all areas and not waver, to seek out new

insights from His Word, and to boldly offer Salvation to all who’ll listen.

Hi,

Well, Shane, welcome to the list, I am simply amazed that people can admit

to being up to 440 pounds, that is *over* thirty stone! I thought my 188

pounds a bit excessive, I must admit to not being overly active as am now

nearly 54 which I should reach that age on 27 July next. My weight is 13

stone and just under 8 pounds.

Now, 440 pounds divided by the number of pounds in a kilogram which is

2.2046, is 199.58269073754876168012337839064, Hmmmmm! used windows

calculator for that.

Cheers.

Wish I could find some of that kind, I suffer from the opposite

Greetings Jo,

You said:

I am Jo Ellen and live in Seattle, WA. I will be 57 on July 27 (Colin?)

Have been diabetic for 15 years, am not blind but my niece is developing

sight problems connected to her diabetes.

Well, glad you were born on that *fantastic* day three years before me, so

you are a *Saturday* child then?

Look forward to hearing from you in future and hope your niece is able to

save her sight.

Cheers.

Welcome. I'm sorry you had to look for a pain support group, but glad

you found this one. I'm Marg, I'm in Georgia, and suffer from

osteoarthritis in a lot of places, the worst being my feet, ankles and knees

I have a hard time walking because of the pain in my ankles and feet, and

sometimes knees...there are times when I'll get a sharp pain in one knee

seemingly out of the blue, which can cause me to lurch or stumble. I also

have diabetes, and although I've lost 48 lbs., I need to lose more. I need

to get more exercise than I do, although it's hard since I have such a hard

time walking. Our swimming pool should be ready soon, and I'm looking

forward to being able to swim.

I noticed your email the other day, and figured you must have

cockatiels. I've had a lot of birds over the last 15 years, including

cockatiels and Hahns Macaws. I had to find a new home for my last Hahns

just last year, as I am not mobile enough to be able to take care of him

properly. He's in a great place, though, near you in Oregon. I still have

2 Parrotlets that I bred and raised, and someone who helps me with them. I

also enjoy all kinds of crafting, especially needlework of all kinds, and

luckily the arthritis in my fingers doesn't bother me too much.

I hope this list will help you, especially on those days when you

need some great support and a place to vent. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

My name is , and I live in Washington state, iun the NW corner odf the

loving husband. I have the following conditions (give ior take a few) :

Osteorarthritis Fibromyalgia

Mild asthma Endometriosis

Lower Limb Lymphedema Spinal stenosis

Spinal arthritis Degenerative Disc Disease

Narcolepsy Stress incontinence

(currently being tested for it) Urgency incontinence

Medication induced constipation Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Depression Panic Attacks

Social Anxiety Borderline Personality

Post Traumatic Stress Hypothyroid

Sciatica

and probably some others I can't think oif right now. . .

But, don't you think that's enough for one person to bear? I do. In fact, I

know it's too much. It has been said that God gives us no more than we can

handle. Sometimes I wonder about that. At this point, I can barely handle a

full

24 hours, much less 24 separate diagnoses.

Anyways, I spend my days ( afternoons & evenings) at Denny's, drinking

coffee

amd working puzzles or doing beadwork. I spend my nights / early mornings

on

the computer, answering emails and surfing the web, researching my various

aches and pains. I go to bed around 7am, PST, and get up around noon or 1pm.

Sometimes I nap throughout the day & night. . . I fall asleep very easily

and

have a hrd tiome staying awake, hence the possible Narcolepsy. I just

completed a

sleep study & multiple sleep latency test, and am awaiting the results.
