There was debate on this issue in the GW community about 6 months ago.

Jim Tuite or Sen. Byrd's office may be able to clear up what

finally happened to the bill at the conclusion of the last session. Or

call your Congressperson's office for further information.

The bill did not pass

It got 213 cosponsors not enough to go forward

I was directly involved in the lobby effort.....the point of the matter comes

down to the President taking ultimate responsibility and therefore all the way

down. Which wasnt done in Gulf WAR

If I am not mistaken, did not our illustrious president declare this policy

of anthrax vaccinations had his blessing? If so, this bill even if passed

would already have his signature in place.

And if he does indeed not have any real respect for the military, would it

mean anything to him if we were made guinea pigs? By the time public

outcries begin he will have finished his term or b very near the end of it.

RE: the unpassed " Drug and Informed Consent Armed Forces Protection Act

of 1998 "

The Pentagon does not consider the anthrax vaccine to by

investigational, experimental or a new use, so they would argue the law

wouldn't have covered it anyway.

Dr. Nass, among others, differs with them on that.

My mom posted this Friday (I think) and said she didn't get an answer

yet. (Oh btw, my name is April, I'm Sandy's daughter.) I'll repost

her questions, but I have one of my own first.

Apparently they (the hosp) only do Remicade infusions at 8:00 AM. My

mom is usually out of severe pain and ready to get her day started

around 10'ish (still in mod pain). Now that she's on blood pressure

pills she's been keeping track of her blood pressure at 8 AM & 8 PM.

The morning b/p is only slightly lower (I'm thinking b/c she's still

in a lot of pain...??), I'm talking maybe ten pts lower while the

night b/p is way low! Tonight it was 113/I can't remember, but it's

lower then last night's. I'm wondering if she needs the b/p meds at

all (her high was 15-something... I need to start paying better

attention!). The way it looks to me (and I couldn't

SPELL 'rheumatoid' until mom was diagnosed!!) is that Prednisone is

still in her system, mix that with still being in pain at 8 AM and

being nervous (mom should've been born a wart--a WORRY-wart!) about

the first infusion, of course her b/p would be high but the night b/p

scares me. Of course I didn't tell her I was concerned, but can

these pills be harmful? Do they take a certain amount of days to

kick in completely? Will that night number keep going down? If the

morning numbers stay high then maybe she won't be a candidate for

Remicade. The nurses were trying to talk her out of the Remicade b/c

it costs them so much money (she has dad's military insurance - they

don't like to spend $$ but after 30 years of service, they can't

complain!). Maybe they'll get their way now. I know she would be

able to give herself the shots--she'd freak the first few times but

she can do it with God's hands wrapped around hers! Are those the

only other choices, self injected meds? Oh I can ask my mom.

~~I didn't mean to write a book, I'm sorry! Thank you all for being

so sweet to my mom! She was always so healthy, I saw her sick once

in '79 (Wow, I didn't know I remembered that!! hahahaha!) so all of

this is foreign territory to her!~~

Thanks again!

Oh, D'OH... here's her original post.........

Good Morning! How long does the Prednisone stay in your system? I

took my first bp pill today.... it's scary! My mind is going 2,000

different ways now. This hypertension isn't the start of heart

disease is it.... I don't want to be paranoid, it's just that all the

side effects of everything I've been on is running through my mind

now. If I've been on Prednisone for a year, it's gotta take a while

to get it out of my system, right? One more question, can you get RA

in your back? I was told that I was loaded w/arthritis but they

didn't say which type. I can't find anything in my books about RA in

the back.

Hope you all are doing well!

God bless!

Sandy

I agree with a that your questions, Sandy and April, are difficult

to answer. I would also advise asking Sandy's rheumatologist everything

you asked us. It may be that you don't have hypertension after all,

Sandy.

As a mentioned, white-coat hypertension is fairly common. Too, blood

pressure readings normally fluctuate during the day with the highest

readings occurring early in the day. Even one's morning coffee can cause

a modest BP elevation. As you've said, there is a strong possibility

that being nervous about the infusion could have affected your BP also.

From the American Iatrogenic Association, " Fear of doctor visit elevates

blood pressure for some " :

http://iatrogenic.org/fearhypertension.html

Prednisone has a plasma half-life of approximately 18 to 36 minutes and

a biologic half life of about 5 hours (see reference below), and, since

you've been off of it for two weeks, it shouldn't be actively

contributing to a hypertension problem; however, since you were on it

about a year, the prednisone could have caused changes in your system

that could be influencing your BP. If that's the case, hopefully, you'll

fade back to normal soon. Prednisone is a potent hormone with many, many

serious systemic effects.

" Glucocorticoid Therapy and Adrenal Suppression " :

http://www.endotext.org/adrenal/adrenal14/adrenal14.htm

Was there any other time in the past that hypertension was an issue,

Sandy?

RA is thought to affect the cervical spine with greater frequency and

severity than the lumbar spine, but both can and do occur. Osteoporosis

and osteoarthritis are also diseases that can accompany RA and affect

the spine. Prednisone can cause spinal fractures and osteoporosis, even

within the first year of use. I would ask what specifically was

discovered about your spine.
