Guest guest
I'm in the same boat as you, Judy! I'm considered obese by most tables but can kick ass athletically. Still, I would like to lose a good 40 more lbs. So it's back to food journaling. Guest guest
another one here who proves BMI is bullcrap!!! when looking at some cases of obesity we are finding other factors of either hypertension, diabetes etc. HOWEVER! one doesn't cause the other they are just LINKED b/c many cases both issues exist. basically when my professor is defining fitness health it is do what we want when we want without limitations of our bodies. if we can move and workout and become active freely, despite weight, he are in a good physical condition so far. when doing the important numbers THAT MATTER cholesterol etc if they are good then we are healthy. to much in this country has been focused on weight, weight loss, jeans size, but so many forget none of that matters if you blood and bone health are crap. if weight is a HEALTH factor for you then work on that if you must otherwise lets look at other positives in the picture. Guest guest
When I was about 9-10 years old I took dance lessons at a local studio. After the beginners' class was done, I'd watch my teacher's younger sister practice. She wasn't flabby-fat, but she was just... large all over. Even at 13-14 years old she was tall and broad and muscular, and no way would anyone say that she had a slim " dancer's " body. But even to my inexperienced eyes, she was the best dancer I'd ever seen. So flash forward a couple decades as I'm channel surfing one night and the sister, Mia s, is a judge on one of those reality dance shows. And she still doesn't have a " dancer's " body! Guest guest
I love veges! I only eat a "sandwich" once a week on Wednesdays when I tutor for 7 hours straight. Even then it's not really a "sandwich," it's a whole wheat wrap. I eat a lot of soup which I know can be high in sodium so I avoid those. My sodium level is in the lower range so I'm not worried about that. I've thought about it and although I could lose weight following a low carb diet, I doubt that I could stick to it the rest of my life. I want to eat healthy balanced meals every day rather than eating low carb. I'm also concerned about not getting enough fiber and getting "backed up," if you know what I mean. I really don't like or respect my Endo. so I'm not following her advice. I'm just going to count calories, eat healthy and watch portion sizes. Jen Subject: Re: Can you be fit and fat? Guest guest
Most of my carbs are vegetables and a little bit of rice and pasta.I don't want to count carbs AND calories, I'm just not willing to do that and I'm concerned about not getting enough fiber and getting constipated.Counting calories and exercising was working for me before so I would rather just do that. I think if I did low carb then I went off of it I would regain the weight plus more...what's the point of doing that?I very rarely eat bread but when I do it's whole grain. I eat brown rice and whole grain pasta...all of which are good for me. So if I just eat what I know is good and have a treat once in a while I should lose weight. Guest guest
Exercise is only 20-30% of the weight loss equation, the rest is what goes in your mouth. If you can't workout it shouldn't destroy your weight loss efforts. Exercise is much more helpful when it comes to maintaining weight loss and it ALWAYS has awesome health benefits (but I'm singing to the choir on that one so that's all I'll say). You'll be fine, Judy, just post here if you're having a snack attack and we'll talk you down! :-) Re: Can you be fit and fat? > i am doing ww online> esp with no exerciseyou are going to be ok judy. i know that you must be in pain, i wouldnt want to workout either. take it easy, work the WW plan and you will heal and be back in action soon.:*carolyn. Guest guest
So the course I have been taking ( Certified Personal Trainer..) teaches that cardiovascular fitness can be improved through exercise BUT being overweight and at an unhealthy bmi can counteract all the hard work you do through exercise. The problem is that as it was explained to me, when you are overweight your body has to work harder to pump blood and nutrients etc... to the designated areas because of the excess fat on the body. This puts strain not only on the heart but all your body's organs, tissues, arteries..etc... So you could be "fit" if you are in a healthy bmi ( I am at a healthy bmi but until I lose 10 more lbs I refer to myself as "fat"...) and have a few extra lbs to lose but what I am being taught is that no matter how much exercise you do if you are not in a healthy weight range for your height then you are putting yourself at risk for so many diseases and conditions. All trainers agree that it is only 20% exercise and 80% what you put in your mouth.A great saying that I try to think about when I am in the mood to overindulge is "You should eat to live, not live to eat".A quick story, my Dad just turned 50. He went to the docs 3 weeks ago and his doc told him he was a walking dead man if he didnt straighten out his act. He has had uncontrolled diabetes for 4 years, high cholesterol and extremely high blood pressure. I nagged him for years on how he should be eating and living. Anyways after his doc visit he called me and asked for help. I wrote him out a diet plan and suggested he start walking briskly for half hour a day ( he already works in construction 8 hrs a day 6 days a week) and went through portion sizes with him. So 3 weeks later he has lost 12 lbs, cut back from 5 insulin injections a day to 2 and is finally feeling great he doesnt need a nap every day like he used to. Oh and one of the things I got him to do was to make sure that with every meal his plate was at least 1/2 full with veggies which btw are full of fibre so if you eat veggies with every meal you will never be constipated:) JackiTo: exercisevideos Sent: Thu, April 7, 2011 11:39:12 AMSubject: Re: Can you be fit and fat? Guest guest
I don't know how much it online, but if you go to www.weightwatchers.com you can find out. There isn't specifically a program for vegetarians but, at least in the meeting rooms there is a handout we give vegetarians about how to make it work for them, especially to help them with healthy sources of lean protein and other nutritional info. I don't know if the online version offers that but I'd think so. The program can be modified very easily to be a fit for vegetarians and vegans as well as just about any health condition, including diabetes. I have several vegetarians and vegans who attend my meetings and most are doing very well with it.
