"My Valentine’s Rose That Never Dies"

Daily diamonds twinkle as I recall the first time I saw my Valentine, across that room, and her magic entered my life.

Even sequins sparkle whenever I see a simple special salad served, like the perfection in all she did.

I smile at every memory, at each joy, large or small, or serendipitous as when I shampoo and my rinsed hair squeaks, then I hear her laugh and see her fun as she whispers "Squeaky Clean".

Yesterday, and last week, and all the weeks before I drive along an underpass, the same underpass I first went through when I took her to the airport as she returned to Italy.

The red rose in my garden that is the first to flower each year, that I always picked when summer arrived, and I always picked for Zena, I never picked last year.

Yet it failed to die, not even through the rains of autumn, nor the snows of Christmas. And still the rose remains, despite all the frosts. Is my Valentine rose about to return this year?
