Guest guest
Oh my Gosh, I was told about 2 weeks ago that I have cataracts and that they developed very quickly since my eye exam just over a year ago. It NEVER occured to me this too, could be from the statin drugs. Now I am REALLY pissed!
Guest guest
I am a 66 yr. old female and have taken Zocor for about 12 years. Zocor has caused me to have cataracts in both eyes. I have now had surgery and the optomoligist verifed that Zocor can increase cataract development. I am angry I was never told this when prescribed the medication. I could have chosen good eyesite, over lowered cholesterol if I had been informed. Th optomologist also indicated that the drug companies knew the connection but did not feel it was significant as a warning because cataracts can be fixed. Yes, now I can see but still have trouble reading for any length of time. The eyes get weary and cloud over. I also notice numbing spots on my legs and other strange neurological and tingling sensations. Has anyone else noticed this? I do not want to take the drug any more but do have genetic very high cholesterol (it was over 300). I have been taking 40 mg of Zocor per day. My triglycerides are still 163 and my cholesterol level is down to 213. Now the doctor wants me to take 80 mg. per day. I balk at this and refused to increase the dosage just because drug companies did research and felt that cholesterol levels should be even lower. Has any one else noticed side effects with the long term use of statins?
Guest guest
Yes, I also had mild cataracts that got suddenly worse after I was put onto Mevacor. I had had one done, and was scheduled for the second one when I read about possible memory deficits from statins, as well as realizing that the severe arm pain was related as well. Didn't even think about the connection with vision until it improved dramatically about a week after I stopped the Mevacor. I went ahead and had the cataract done, and asked the eye surgeon about the connection with statins, and he said that he didn't think that statins caused cataracts, but had seen cases where they got worse. (I'm a 62-year old female.) By the way, since I have been researching this subject, have run into studies that indicate that statins and even the whole subject of " reducing cholestrol " makes very little difference in the longevity of women.
