Vaccines

The Risks • The Benefits • The Choices

Vaccines are given to protect our children during the period of time when

they are most likely to contract " childhood diseases. " By

injecting small amounts of inactivated (killed) viruses or attenuated

(partially inactivated) viruses and bacteria into the body, the immune

system will develop antibodies that will protect them from disease.

How effective is this theory? Are vaccine

programs safe and long-lasting?

The current childhood vaccination schedule includes 21

vaccines to be given by 6 months of age, and 38 to be given by the time a

child goes to school.
