Families often have their reasons for not wanting the world to know in an obituary what killed their loved one. Whether it's cancer or dementia or AIDS or syphilis or suicide or murder or whatever, some causes of death carry a certain stigma that the families do not want associated with their loved one or themselves. Losing a loved one is painful enough, without the added burden of feeling that the strangers who are reading the obituary are making negative judgments. Today, most obituaries are written by the family, or by the funeral home.
