Guest guest
Just thought I would comment on the article that Ursula sent (which was a good one Urs) on Eosinophilic Esphagitis and GERD. as many of you know underwent the Nissen surgery in November of '99. Six months later we were told that perhaps might have been misdiagnosed (due to the severe chest pain/achalasia that he developed post surgery) and perhaps he had EE (Eosinophilic Esphagitis). Every single one of 's pathology reports indicated " Occasional Eosinophils seen or eosinophils seen throughout " In fact, there was one on my son Mark's report, that said " numerous eosinophils and eosinophilia seen throughout. " has since undergone 2 more EGD's since November of '99. The report from July and November of 00 did not note any eosinophils. With EE as a disease you will find numerous, very high levels of eosinophils. Hence, did not have EE afterall.... has severe GERD and a dysmotility of the esophagus, the latter being recently confirmed by other tests. This is not to say that one should ignore a pathology report that indicates eosinophils. If the child is on oral corticosteroids at the time that the biopsy is taken, then that could mask a higher number of eosinophils that actually exist. Since was on steroids on all occasions and eosinophils were still found another EGD was performed in November while off of steroids to see what the biopsy would show. The outcome for EE was normal. has extremely abnormal amounts of eosinophils in his sinuses so it was strongly suspected that he had EE. Anyone that has a child with GERD that is not responsive might want to inquire about the possibility of EE as the two almost mimic each other to a Tee as far as symptoms go, EE can present of look just like GERD. EE is an allergic disease that can cause very significant problems of the esophagus, stomach, and colon. The treatment is usually Gastrocrom, an elemental diet, and in most cases...oral steroids. Most of these children have multiple food allergies, often severe in nature and some are on feeding tubes and TPN as their source of nutrition.
