Guest guest
Hi. Does anybody know if it is better to supplement L-Tryptophan or 5 HTP or in which circumstances one or the other is better. Also does anyone have any experience in the use of St. 's Wort? Many thanks, . X

My son has problems going to sleep and is unable to concentrate. He is very OCD and anxious. I am exploring possibilities. What is the best test, (cheapest hopefully!) to be able to get a better picture? Thank you. . > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > Hi. Guest guest
I would probably start with salivary melatonin. This can be done by Genova, is not too expensive, and would give you a starter by indicating whether the endpoint of the tryptophan-serotonin system was 'abnormal'. You could then look at whether naturally increasing dietary tryptophan or metabolic products like 5-HTP made a difference or whether melatonin supplementation was needed.KenSubject: Re: Tryptophan questionTo: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Date: Sunday, 14 August, 2011, 17:26 > > > Subject: Tryptophan question > To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe > Date: Saturday, 13 August, 2011, 7:56 > > Dear Ken, I'm afraid I don't really have the answers to any of those questions - I cannot afford to test. Guest guest
Hi , I don't have any of Ken's expertise of this issue, but if you don't have money to test, the vast majority of kids with asd who cannot fall asleep do well with melatonin. Start very small--1 mg, but then work up. My son does well with 3 mgs. It means falling asleep at 11 instead of 2. Melatonin is very safe, so trying it rather than testing is something I did. As for OCD and anxiety, have you considered his adrenal glands. It's my opinion that almost every kid with asd could use some adrenal support. If they need help, you'll find that other measures really don't make a big difference. Also, I think he is on inositol, but perhaps some GABA could help with both anxiety and focus. Guest guest
I also meant to say that ime most kids with asd do better with 5-htp as it doesn't require the extra conversion. In my research of it (long ago so going by memory) there was very little risk involved in trialling 5-htp.
