I feel bad about not speaking to you all this weekend, but I had to

work this weekend, and my husband and I had so much going on that this

is realy my first chance at the computer. Also, I lost some messages

due to a computer problem which I fixed. After I get some rest

tonight, things will be calmer this week until Thursday, Friday, and

Saturday. I have a diabetes class to go to on Thursday, and of

course, I will share what I have learned. I have found lots of

articles, in which I will send one or two tomorrow. I agree whith

someone on the list who was talking about putting one article on the

list at a time and discussing it. I'm going to try to get one on each

day this week. Some of them are a little out of date, but I don't

think I have anything before this month. You're carrying on great

conversations on this group, and I hope you continue to enjoy it. I

just wanted you to know that I haven't forgotten you. I, and probably

some of the rest of you lead verry busy lives. Also, I think it's

great that some of you can support blind diabetics that don't have

access to this list. I will talk to you tomorrow.

There are a number of type two diabetics using insulin. The general definition

for a type one is that their beta cells in the pancreas no longer produce any

insulin at all. The theory behind type two, who do produce insulin, taking

insulin is that it can help stabilize them better than the oral meds.

Bernstein tends to prefer oral meds for type two diabetics because it is

possible that, over a long period of time, using insulin for a type two can

damage the body's ability to produce its own insulin. However, if it works,

that is what is important.

Diane,

I know that prefilled cartridges and pens are more expensive. Will

insurance or Medicare cover them? I am still on pills called Glucovance

twice a day, but they don't seem to be doing the trick. I eventually may

have to start using insulin and I don't mind admitting that I am scared at

the prospect of having to mix this stuff and measure the right amount before

injection. I have heard how dangerous taking too much can be, so the

thought is pretty scary. Premixed cartridges with a pen sound like the

perfect solution for someone blind so I would hope that any insurance would

take this into account and cover it fully...

Yes Rick;pen and insulen all supplys covered.Premix in my opinion is the

only way a blind diabetic should go for independence. At first a nurse was

coming filling my needels I hated the weekly intrusion,Squaucked and

complained like an old chicken,so the novelin pen was brought to my

attention just to shut me up it worked! Both shut me up and did the job!

Dianne,

Splenda is the sweetner made from sugar. I found I need to use a little

less of it, but I do prefer it over the Equal. I've also tried the Family

Dollar Diet Cola made with sucralose and, personally, didn't like it as well

as I do Pepsi 1. It has nothing to do with the sweetner, however. Just

didn't like the flavor of the soda. I have to try the Diet Rite products

yet. They were out of them at the local supermarket when I inquired about

them. I've had them when they were made with aspartame and loved the

flavors!
