Hi folks,

Good news - my battle over VAT on new vehicles looks as though it could have a successful conclusion. Here is a copy of the letter I received from the VAT inspectors:-

========================================================

As you are aware it is the VAT registered trader's obligation to charge thecorrect rate of VAT, as it is a self assessed tax. I would also expect atrader to know whether any specific VAT reliefs existed which may be ofbenefit to their customers. This is not an H M Customs & Excise matter asthe garage suggested. This was a commercial transaction between you and thegarage, therefore it is up to them to try and assist you.I would suggest to the garage that they cancel their original invoice andraise another to reflect both the car and the cost of conversion. This wouldthen enable you to benefit from the VAT relief available. The conversioncompany would then provide the garage with an invoice for the adaptions andany VAT charged could be recovered by the garage.

========================================

And this is the reply I received from the garage:-

=========================================

Dear Mr Birkenshaw,

Thank you for your e mail dated 15th June 2001. We will be happy to cancel the original invoice and raise another to reflect both the car and the cost of conversion.

However, as you will appreciate, we will need confirmation from the appropriate authorities before we can do this. I have today e mailed Hodgson requesting such authority (see below) and I am awaiting his response.

As soon as we have received confirmation from the relevant authorities we will proceed as required.

Yours Sincerely
