American Diabetes Association Teams Up With Billie King To Support Young Tennis Players With Diabetes The Billie King Foundation and the American Diabetes Association are working together to recognize scholar athletes with type 1 diabetes. Named for two tennis-playing sisters who have grown up with the disease, the King Foundation's Donnelly Awards offer annual prizes of $5,000 to two individuals who play interscholastic, intercollegiate or intramural tennis and have type 1 diabetes. The application deadline for the awards is May 15, 2001. Click below to find out more: http://www.diabetes.org/enews/030801_billie.asp 3. The ADA Is Looking For A Few Good Activists (okay, more than a few) President Bush wants to continue efforts to double funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH, which oversees diabetes research funding). This is good news. But how can we make it great news for people affected by diabetes? We need to make sure diabetes research funding increases at a much faster rate than the rest of NIH. Our goal: to reach the funding recommendations of the Diabetes Research Working Group as quickly as possible. To do this, we need an army of advocates calling, writing and e-mailing their elected officials. Join thousands of other diabetes activists and sign up to receive the Advocacy E-news. Every two weeks or so, you'll get information on diabetes-related issues facing the federal government - along with a call to action on what you can do about it from your own computer. Insulin Without Injections May Be A Reality In Near Future People with diabetes who use insulin may be able to look forward to a less painful future. A significant percentage of the estimated 16 million people with diabetes in the U.S. must give themselves insulin injections several times a day to regulate their blood sugar. New technologies such as inhaled insulin, implanted insulin pumps, insulin pills and insulin mouth spray offer hope for people with diabetes wishing to forego the sting of needles. Heart Surgery Risky For People With Diabetes Suffering from greater rates of artery blockage than those without the disease, people with diabetes account for 15-25 percent of the candidates for angioplasty and coronary bypass surgery. A new study finds that people with diabetes undergoing artery-clearing balloon angioplasty operations have a higher death rate following the operation than people who don't have diabetes.
