Guest guest
Amen! I know the " making something else hurt " thing. I ended up slamming by back against a wall because the pain from the myofacial spasm was soooooooo bad. I felt like a trapped animal ready to chew my foot off to get away from it. My current doc does treat me and it gives you a reason to live again. We have a right to pain treatment and say so. Next time you see her ask her if she's worried about DEA audit. Should take her back a step. Insist on workable treatment or ask for reference of a pain doc/family doc who will help you and make it clear you refuse to live like this. Sometimes it helps to have a family memeber talk to these guys....like grown type kids or hubby or someone who really knows what is happening. Make sure nothing goes on your chart that goes against you like " drug seeking behavior " or anything like that. That can screw you up with any other doctor. That is used way too much without it being true. *¬*.¸¸.·´¨`»*«´¨`·.¸¸.*¬* On the internet, no knows you're a cat. ~StrykerMom~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --- MEENUMOM@... wrote: > > I do, GET ANOTHER DOCTOR! this person is a sadist. > if they are unwilling to > change treatment that is NOT working, find someone > who will. I have been lerking and reading and I sure have compassion for ya'll too. We moved and left a doctor of 22 years that took very good care of us.My husband and I both have bad health and a lot of pain. We have been through three doctors already because they say take over the counter Tylenol. PLEASE!!!!! I am sure all reading this are graoning right now. Finally today I take my hubby to the doc with pain under his rib cage and he has wrestled with it for four days now until we both have lost so much sleep and I tell the doctor, after he xrays and diagnoses as a muscle problem, that hubby needs something for pain and his late doctor kept him on pain meds for neuropothy in his legs and back injuries and surgeries etc. He says ok, he will give him something to relieve the pain. he writes him a script for just 20 pills....Grrrrrrr. He doesn't like to give pain medicine. That's a crock!!!! It helps to read in here of other's experiences because then we don't quite feel so all alone in this. Another thing I am concerned about is up above you mentioned to watch our charts so that they don't label one as a drug seeker or put something derogatory (sp) in the chart. How can we do this? I wish some of them could feel the pain we all go through and come to them for help. We all could go to wally world and pick something that won't and will never work. They need to get real!!!! Thanks for listening to me vent. Guest guest
I don't think that I would personally take up with any doctor that way. If you put them on the defensive, they will close down. Ask them for a reference to a Pain MGMT. specialist. They are very attuned to issues of pain and understand how to treat it. Most doctors have no clue and are afraid of narcotics for addictive reasons. I think one may be labeled with " drug seeking tendencies " If the doctor feels there is nothing wrong. That is why you have to forgo the asking for pain med's from regular internists, family med guys and go straight to the professionals who get it. The internists will set you up p[ill to pill b/c the states do look at them carefully. If it was my medical licence, I would make darn sure you were in pain or refer you to a specialist. Look at it from their perspective. They are afraid to make mistakes with these meds people DO ABUSE THEM>The only other suggestion I have is to ask for more tests and alternative treatments. Tell them you are willing to try it all b/c the pain is so bad, that this is no way to live. It is impeding on your life functioning. Tell them how it affects your daily activities. Guest guest
Hi Halfpint I'm Diane and I also have neuropathy in both my feet and right leg. The Specialists (neurologists) have told me that they can't do anything for me and that I'm just going to have to live with it. The only pain meds they told me to take is extra strength tylenol. I don't know if it's because I'm allergic to Vicodin and Percocet or they just don't believe me even though the tests show that I have dead or damaged nerves. What does your hubby take for pain meds for his neuropathy? Diane - Minnesota > > > > > > > We have a right to pain treatment and say so. Guest guest
You are very right about asking for pain meds. The dr will at some point write a script but it will not be pain meds it will be sugar pills it will be put into the files that follow a person to every dr they go to as having drug seeking tendencies,it also is put somehow on the perscrption so the pharmacy knows also and no pain management climic will take anyone that has that in their file.Pain management doesnt give you medication right off the bat either you have to have a psychological exam by pain management psychiatrist in order to determine if your pain is true or false and then have any other tests those drs order before you are even excepted as a pain patient.Just because u are referred doesnt mean you will be seen by the pain clinic MEENUMOM@... wrote: I don't think that I would personally take up with any doctor that way. Guest guest
Not in NY. I have been in pain mgmt since 1995 solid. I had an accident at work, had gottne pain meds for ( impingemnet symndroms, had surgeries 3, got a frozen shoulder. I had been all the while treated by the orthopedist with narcotics. After my third surgery the orthopedist said I should see a pain specialist. I called a clinic, was examined and accepted as a patient with RSD. I had 3 years of PT during my surgeries phase. The pain clinic gave me cervical injections and narcotics. PT was aggrevating that. I prior to Pain MGMT put mytself into chiropractic but it aggrevated it so bad. There was never a time when I had to be evaluated by a psychiatrist for " Addictive tendancies prior to giving narcotics " Some doctors may do that if they don't understand pain. There are some pain clinics that obviously want to do their own evaluation prior, but they do see you. They may chose not to treat you if they don't see a problem. I would worry less about being labeled a " Narcotic wanabee user " and more about getting proper care from able physicians. There is nothing on prescriptions that say you are a person asking for pain meds. I don't know where that came from. Pharmacists fill whatever the script is that the doctor writes providing that the info is written legally and correctly. They do not have the legal right to even ask you what you are taking the medication for. To write something on a script like that would be illegal and slanderous. Doctors would not unless they are complete fools jeopardize their entire careers and practice on doing something like that. Also, if you show no prior records to the treating doc, the doctor sees nothing. If this is of concern, you should get a hold of the records so you can see them for yourselves. There is something called the Freedom of Information Act which guarantees patients copies of their medical files from ANY doctor or pharmacy. This is a federal law. Guest guest
Sometimes they may ask and I think rightfully so, if you are suicidal b/c those drugs can kill you asap on overdose. Also, they can ask if you ever took illegal substances and were an alcoholic. I can understand but I highly doubt all the other stuff. (Doc writing to pharmacies etc.) It would be unprofessional, illegal and remiss of any doctor to give out these meds when they truly believe you are a malingerer and a fake. Worthy of having their medical licence yanked. True pain doctors know pain. They know what causes what type of symptoms. When pain is described like for example, " Burning, itching, scraping, banging. They know exactly what could cause that and how to make you move to mimic it to be sure. I would not bother with regular doctors. That is why you have specialists. You would not go to a podiatrist to have your cavity filled. I am glad we have this forum to voice our opinions and tell our experiences. if I read that " things followed you and you may be labeled, I would be afraid to seek treatment " That would be a pity. Guest guest
My injury started back in 99. Im lucky as shortly after my diagnosis I got a new job and started with Kaizer for my insurance. was scheduled to have surgery on my lebo to take bone frag. out ( I fell while taking the head gasket replacement out to my truck, tripped over a eztention cord, mind u was more concerned about dropping the head than me)WHen went for surgery the anestesiologist specialized in pain care and started seeing her till they took away the kaiser as an option. Luckly she knew of a doc that I could see and said if she or anyone in her family was DX with the RSD, she would see him and I have been seeing him ever sense. The only reason I had to see a psych. ws prior to doing the trial of my spinal cord stim. Otherwise, never required. YOu ahve the right to ask them why they want you to see this physician first and ifyour not satisfied with the answer, find another doc. HOpe having a pain free day Blessed Be Deb > > > > Not in NY. Guest guest
Charlotte, This is a hard situation to be in! In my mind you have every right to be given the treatment whether that is pain meds, physical therapy, etc, to help you deal with your pain. On the other hand I have seen from working with a family practice doctor the people who abuse the system and are addicted to pain meds. This is a big problem for most doctors. The best thing I can suggest is that maybe try going back to this doc with some kind of documentation of your pain. Maybe keeping a pain diary to show what it is like on a daily basis along with a pain scale (1 for least amount of pain and 10 for the worst). Try to talk to her about what your life is like and how you need some kind of help and a pain plan. If she is still unwilling to do much of anything it is time for a 2nd opinion. You have the right to get help and if this doctor isn't doing it find another! I wish you the best of luck and pray that your pain lessens soon. Hugs, > > I had been doing really well so hadn't been taking pain meds for a few months. I went from taking about 15 meds a day to around 5. I then went back to work in May and started having major problems again. I went to the doctor, and she offered me massage and muscle relaxers. I thought this odd, but figured I would give it a chance to work. Now, I'm still in extreme pain and she is unwilling to give me pain medication. I've missed so much work I'm now umemployed again. I'm sad, depressed, and on top of feeling like a failure I am in constant pain to the point of tears. I can't sleep and I'm really scared because I just don't know what to do next. Guest guest
the reason this pain clinic has to have psych exams is because a person can say they are not suicidal and are and because as ev1 knows with chronic pain comes depression and the doctors at pain clinic want to make sure u are treated for everything not just the pain but everything else that u are effected by with chronic pain. the sad thing about alot of drs the help with the pain but to they help with what ur mind deals with while going through the pain.I have never met any dr who will call her patients to see how they are feeling mine does.Plus anothe rule of her clinic is she is the only dr who can give her patients pain meds while being treated by her and u have to sign papers if u abuse meds etc u are released from her care and if in state of indiana u are released from a pain clinic it is put in state system and not allowed at another pain center because u abused the system.I honestly like the way this clinic is set because u are truely there to get help then u wont abuse the system if ur there just to score drugs sooner or later u get caught.Recently the only other pain dr in my area was disbarred because he was handing out narcotics like they were candy to people who didnt need them and he got jail time. so you see this is why doctors who are here to help people cover themselves.People get mad at the drs but if they are drs who love what they do they arent gonna to jepordize their work to give drugs with out doing alot of checking into the person starlyin@... wrote: not here either I never went for a psych exam I went to a pain Dr and he started treating me that day and that was 6 years ago .. the only unusual thing he asked me was if I don't help U today will you take your life and I said O hell im married to a marine no Dr could drive me to that he laughed and wrote me a script Rose
Guest guest
Charlotte, Another thing you can do is ask your doctor if together you can do a pain contract. some pain docs and other docs do those. they basicallly state that the two of you together hace worked ot a regimin for for medicatiosn and that you will not go to another for pain medications. This is done by alot so I have heard. I know my doc in talking to him has some patients that he does do that with, others , like me he does not. When pts. start losing there meds, or spilling them down the sink obciously this is gonna make any other facilities. You can arrainge with him that if you get bad over a weekend and cant stand it, (this is one thing my pain doc and I did, have one hospital that is within your policy not vcevacvvvery where the office is (my pain docs office is 110 miles away so obviously we did one closer to me) have an agreement on a hospitall near you that can go and he will call in an Im or someting for the pain. Hope this makes sense if not let me know vision is a bit blurry > > > > I had been doing really well so hadn't been taking pain meds for > a few months.
