Okay y'all - here's an update. So far 65 people have made reservations for our

LBD symposium on Thursday afternoon, January 19th from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm.

It's free, but if you're planning on coming, the hospital Health line is taking

reservations since we're providing refreshments and need to know how many people

to expect. The RSVP number is . (If we go over 200, we'll have

to move to a larger facility!) The symposium is a collaborative effort between

the LBDA, Coral Springs Medical Center, the city of Coral Springs (awarded a

grant for the symposium) and the Alzheimer's Family Center Inc in Broward County

(helped write the grant.) As one of the 4,000 flyers mailed out says, " Join us

for an informative afternoon and learn about the latest research, diagnosis and

treatments for LBD from local and national experts. " The local expert is Dr.

Barnea of Coral Springs who is board certified as both a neurologist and a

psychiatrist. (He diagnosed and treated my dad's

LBD and saw him up until a week before he died.) He also teaches a

pharmacology course at one of the local colleges. The national expert is Dr.

Tanis Ferman of the Mayo Clinic in ville. She is on the LBD Scientific

Advisory Council and will address both the latest research as well as behavioral

challenges of LBD. We'll also feature a special panel discussion with both

visiting and local caregivers and people with LBD. I'm going to try and get the

symposium recorded so it will be available on CD (or as a download perhaps.)

The symposium will replace our monthly LBD support group for January. (That's

growing, too, and we had 21 folks at our December meeting - we meet in the same

room the symposium will be held: Coral Springs Medical Center Medical Office

Complex, 3100 Coral Hills Drive in Coral Springs - two blocks west of University

Drive and one block south of Sample Road on the northwest side of Fort

Lauderdale. The good thing about Sample Road is that is has

exits off the Florida turnpike, the Sawgrass Expressway and I-95.)

If you'd like to be a part of our symposium, but can't be here in person -

please mail a photograph (any size) of you and/or your loved one - (old photos,

pre-LBD, recent - your choice!) Mail them to Jayne Caughran, 4900 NW 53rd

Court, Tamarac FL 33319-3246. (Some of you have already met my 89-year old mom

- her doctor is also Dr. Barnea and she's a charter member of our monthly LBD

support group!) Photos can not be returned but will be made into a collage and

placed on easels in the symposium room. - the name of the symposium is " The

Many Faces of Lewy Body Dementia " so we need some real faces, besides the live

ones. If you're coming, feel free to bring a photo or two with you and we'll

build a collage on the 19th. If you'd like a copy of the flyer, please mail my

mother a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you're located in the US. For our

Canadian and over the pond folks, just provide an addressed envelope and I'll

figure out the postage.

Last but not least, if you have any questions, please e-mail, snail mail or

call me at . I might be a little busy. If you are in south

Florida already and have a spare bed for what may become the first annual LBD

slumber party, please let me know so we'll have places for our out-of town folks

to stay. Some folks are already car pooling down for the symposium. I hope

we'll be able to record this for anyone who can't join us in person. Cyberhugs,

Carol
