Guest guest
I would see a chiropractor if at all possible. Regular doctors never did much for me other than give me drugs; my chiropractor, " Dr. No " , actually healed me.Back pain is the worst hugs. I've been taking it very easy since Wednesday -- hoping the rest and steroids would help with the sciatica. Unfortunately, if anything, it's getting worse... It's gone for just the back of my thigh down to the back of my calf now. Not a good thing! I'm going nuts wondering " will this/that hurt or help " and I can't seem to find any answers anywhere! I'm still waiting for the Sports Medicine people to get back to me... I've gained quite a bit of muscle definition since I started my video exercises, and I'm very worried I will lose all that, too. Not to mention gaining back weight I've lost! I may be looking at an epidural in the near future. Not good for my wallet at all! Guest guest
Hi Indyrose, I'm so sorry to hear it isn't getting any better! Is there another doc that you can get a hold of if they don't call you back Monday? I understand your fears of losing muscle definition and gaining weight! I have been through all that because of surgeries I've had and life interfering (and my allowing it to interfere) since I started exercising again a few years ago. Regarding weight gain, yes, it can happen if you are not careful with your food while you are unable to be very active. When it comes to weight loss, about 80% of it is food intake (only about 20% is exercise). Exercise is especially helpful with weight maintenance but again, watching the food intake is key. Muscle definition: Yes, if you stop exercising you will lose muscle definition. However, the good news is, that you can get it back and it is easier, from my experience, than losing weight. I have had to quit exercising for months at a time and while it is incredibly frustrating to lose that definition, once you can start working out again, it comes back more quickly than you'd think. I know that doesn't help tremendously because, like I said, I do understand the fears and frustrations having lived them (more than once). I understand the wallet thing too. My car has been a tremendous financial drain lately and I've had to go to paying with a credit card instead of cash which I hate. More worries do not help recovery. I hope the docs get back with you fast and help you find relief. Keep talking with us too, the support here has always been hugely helpful to me! Hugs, Getting rather worried... Guest guest
Oh gosh, can you go see a chiropractor? When my sciatica acts ups that what I do and seems to be more effective than steroids and heaven forbid an epidural - yikes.Vennitta I've been taking it very easy since Wednesday -- hoping the rest and steroids would help with the sciatica. Guest guest
I tend to agree - an MD will likely just give you meds whereas a Chiro will help to get to the imbalances/subluxations that are causing the problem to begin with (that said, since you have a herniated disc, I'd try to find a referral to a good chiro - like other professions there are good and bad ones and I'm guessing a bad one could mess up a herniated disc!). Yes, people say once you start going to a chiro you have to keep going and that it isn't a long term solution - but in my opinion, I'd rather be adjusted on a regular basis than take drugs on a regular basis. So many of the meds have long term side effects, my MIL was on the prescription NSAIDs and she now has congestive heart failure which we think was cause, in part, by long term use of those meds (like over years and years) ((HUGS)) Donna To: exercisevideos Sent: Sun, March 27, 2011 1:45:46 PMSubject: Re: Getting rather worried... Guest guest
Hi Indyrose, ((HUGS)) - it is so hard to find the right balance of what will help/what will hurt. I do agree 100% with though - weight loss is mostly diet and your muscles have amazing memory so even if you have to take some time off the strength/definition will come back more quickly than you think. Also, as you start to feel better you can experiment with doing some exercises that don't affect the injured area - perhaps some upper body work? Take care - Donna To: exercisevideos Sent: Sun, March 27, 2011 1:21:40 PMSubject: Getting rather worried... Guest guest
Although it is true weight loss is mostly diet, however when people are on steroids many of them gain weight, sometimes a lot of weight. I was one of the lucky ones because instead of gaining a lot of weight I lost a lot. Here are some tips for eating while on steroids, I found them by doing online searches.Keep your sodium intake low and drink plenty of water,Cut your sugar intake too.I had 3 days of 1,000mg of steroids, followed by a 10 day taper of prednisone. While I was on the prednisone, I couldn't stand the taste of salt or sweets...they were just TOO salty or too sickly sweet. I read that steroids can give you diabetes, luckily it didn't do that to me.Before careful and make sure to take all of the doses, you don't want to experience any withdrawal symptoms!
