Guest guest Posted June 20, 2001 Report Share Posted June 20, 2001 Hi Carol, Yes, it's true, not long after humans began to count, using their fingers, there must have been a guy who came up with the idea that collecting fingers from everyone else was an easier way of earning a living than going out hunting and gathering. But the VAT version is not just unique to the UK - I suspect it was a European idea, and the term means Valued Added Tax: i.e., every time someone does anything that increases the value of an item, no matter how small, there is the finger collector waiting to trim off his bit of the added value. Don't worry, they stop before they get down to the knuckle - just, and maybe that's why so many of us give "finger" salutes to our politicians?
