Doesn't the (German) text imply that the treatment methods cause the illness

to tend to become chronic or am I reading that wrongly?

. . . shows a not unsubstantial (a better expression could certainly be

found for this such as important, substantial, etc.) tendency towards

becoming chronic.

This should make sense in the given context.

Then the text says:

bei der Patientin vorliegende Erkrankung...'

Is 'Krankheitsverlauf' here 'the previous history of the illness in

general' ?

No. this is the " course or progress of the disease / illness
