HI Marcy:

Polypharmacy is often necessary if you are looking at the triad of

OCD, AD(H)D and TS. This is not unusual in boys although they are

usually younger than your son is now when they are diagnosed.

Do you have access to a skilled pediatric psychopharmacologist? That

is what I would suggest if you think you are dealing with this

triad. Often our kids look like they might have tics but they are

compulsions - this was the case for our son Steve and the p-docs told

us to watch out for it. Transient tics are very common with OCD.

Medicating comorbid disorders is very tricky and takes more than the

typical doctor IMO.

As hard as it is, I am a strong believer in calling a spade a spade

when it comes to OCD. Giving the situation a label and explaining

that this is a no-fault brain disorder for which we have very good

treatments that most people respond very well to is an important

step. Until then the shame and stigma tend to paralyze us. Just my

opinion......

We started attending the OCF Conference so our son, Steve, could meet

others dealing with OCD. Even though he tends to get verbal diarrhea

about OCD etc. I have seen first hand how liberating this experience

has been for him. Meeting docs who have dedicated their professional

lives to helping people with OCD in their struggle against a cruel

disorder was nothing short of inspiring for him. He no longer had to

feel like a freak or that he was irretrievably damaged. He has now

met hundreds of people living with OCD and has seen how they live

their challenging lives with grace while often making invaluable

contributions in their work and family lives. Nothing could have

inspired a kid more after he had been told by some docs that his case

was practically hopeless.

If you have a good E & RP therapist you can leave the job of engaging

your son in treatment up to them. If you need to intervene to ensure

he follows with treatment I would suggest you need to find a new

therapist. It took us about a dozen docs before we found someone who

could really help our son. Many on this list have hit paydirt way

before that number.

There are on line support groups for people with OCD of all ages.

OCD Kids Support Group

The OCD Kids Support Group exists as an online source of support

and information for children (7-12) with Obsesssive-Compulsive

Disorder. Our group is a " specific focus " extension of the OCD and

Parenting List. Children of parents who subscribe to the parenting

list may participate in an online community featuring peer

interactivity moderated by Kathy Mac, LICSW. Parents may

submit subscription requests at

additional information please click on the list's URL below or

Worrying that talking with others about OCD causing OCD is not an

unusual concern. I have not seen this ever be a problem, I wonder

has anyone else. GOod luck, take care, aloha, Kathy (h)

Hi Kathy

Thanks for asking, Kaitlin came through the surgery fine, she had to stay

over 1 night

she is still in alot of pain but not as bad as thursday and friday, trying

to not take perceset(?spelling) just advil,

she had an allergic reaction to morphine, just to make things more

interesting, and an asthma attack the next morning and some bad ocd thoughts. It

was a

good thing we took the gallbladder out, even though it showed up on no test, her

galbladder was abnormal

anatomically, very inflamed and had scarring from repeated episodes of

inflamation, I

hope we have gotten to the bottom of the problem of the chronic pain. Waiting

for her to come out of surgey and recovery were the longest 4 hrs of my life.

Any way ocd seems more in control today which is always a good thing. Thanks

again for the support! Lori

sorry I cannot resist forwarding this tonight......in view of the lively talks here....

this was sent to me by a very intelligent wonderful lady friend I have known and liked for years........and she worked in a cardiology office for many years with respected physicians she admired......so with tongue in cheek, or not.........

lol

* * * O F F I C I A L G O V E R N M E N T S T A T I S T I C S * * *a. The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.b. Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000.c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. d. The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.e. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is 1,500.f. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.000188.* Statistical Significance: Doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gunowners.* Conclusion: On a statistical possibility basis, guns don't kill people, doctors do.* Fact: Not everyone has a gun, but almost everyone has a doctor.* Recommended Action: Please alert all your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand.SPECIAL NOTE: Out of concern for the public, statistics on lawyers have been withheld for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention.
