Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for responding so sensitively to my post. I feel better each time a read one. If and when I see this mom again, I plan to kindly let her know that her question/comments made me uncomfortable and to take the opportunity to " bore " her with additional details about my daughter's very special disability. Furthermore, I won't hesitate to do the same with other rude/ignorant folks in the future. Thanks again. Guest guest
Ok.. I have to share my one story on this subject, I may have said it once before, so if its familiar... oops was probably about 3 yrs old, and we only had Medi-Cal (state insurance) at the time, so service wasn't so great, required long waits in waiting rooms, etc. After about 45 mins this particular visit, is frustrated about something, he understood everything we said, but couldn't make us understand him, causing him great frustration, he was flustered and threw, what to me, was a minor tantrum, he was upset, but not all over the floor or anything. This woman, who's son has been well behaved, is looking down her nose at me the whole time, it was written so clearly on her face that she was just appauled with my childs behavior (we're on the other side of the fence here, with not looking typically Downs, especially when he was smaller). Well I of course was disgusted with her, but kept to myself... until about 20 mins later when her child threw a full blown tantrum... I couldn't resist... i leaned over and said... " My son has Down syndrome....what's your kids problem??? " I don't think she looked my direction again....

Guest guest
My donation to the " ignorance " subject.....at a >family birthday party a few weeks ago, an attendee whom >I didn't know shared with a room full of people that " there >was a little downs girl on her block who was very sweet, >the kids loved playing with her, and she has a tongue about >THIS long " -- and held her fingers about 10 inches apart. >UGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > > >Deborah (mommy to Logan, 2 3/4; Shane (MDS) 11 months) > Sounds like this lady was describing a dog, not a human being. I think that what really frustrates me sometimes is that I forget that many people live in the " dark ages " with respect to understanding disabilities. If I could just remember that we still have a very long way to go in getting the message out that all people are people. Instances such as these jolt me back to reality. Guest guest
Hi Judy, It's Kirsty from Australia. We had rushed to hospital a couple of weeks ago you will probably see the story on another email so I will cut it short but the Doctor who was interested in MDS came from Ireland and he claimed that the facilities in England were very few and far between for children with any form of DS but in Ireland they were quite good. I don't know how much truth is in this but he was very interested in learning as much as he could re MDS. Lots of Love Kirsty Craig on 5 3 MDs ignorance Hi everyone,Today i've been sending email around the UK telling them about our MDS,IMDSA group ,.The health care, education and local council. etc,One town in the UK said she's put our mail as junk. us the mds :(So being me i wrote back and explained what we are MDS or IMDSA and one daythey may just need our help.Little reasearch on mds so we may as parents maybe able to help.Maybe she'll realise we are here to help, they need us as we know asparents better than the experts. We need people to recognize us a group, and not bin us as garbage beforethey have time to read and understand our goals,I mean to tell everyone about us that why parents and health care, education will find us.All we need is to be noticed, and we here to help. I love this group andtelling people we get more parents that need our help. I'ts helped metremondous!!!!Judy mum to mds age 9Won't you please consider adding your personal story on the MDS website today? http://www.mosaicdownsyndrome.com*************************************************MDS MESSAGE BOARD - http://www.mosaicdownsyndrome.com/discus*************************************************
