Hi thereI was just wondering what all your views are on lansinoh and lanolinin general? The longer Im in this field the more I dislike it! Itscompletely overused - messy , tacky and stains clothing. Some mums areallergic to it. Really expensive - about 19euros per tube ( $25) . Andits marketed as being a "must have ". The best thing I find is expressed milk and have also startedrecommending an organic nipple balm based on sunflower oil and beeswax- this seems far nicer and softer than a product based on sheep fat. Am I on my own here ?!! Nicola O'Byrne IBCLC

No, you are not on your own, Nicola! I understand the concept of moist wound healing, but find it takes a longer time than if the healing process is assisted by something that actually encourages healing. In my experience, that is herbal also: Calendula (from marigolds) actually does assist healing. I have learned this from using it on my feet last winter. I usually have very dry feet, especially my heels. They tend to crack and bleed despite using emollients, creams and lotions of varying degrees of increasing viscosity. Have even used a foot creme (Burt's Bees) where you apply it and wear socks over it to bed. This last winter I tried Calendula cream and within a few days the cracks were almost healed. I continued to use it and they never returned. Will use myself again to test its worth and will be using it prophylactically.

Mother Love Herbal products carries a nipple cream with Calendula in it and I have been using their samples as a trial. So far, it has proven very effective.

And I totally agree about the expressed milk. Have continued to recommend it. Unfortunately, most women have been given Lansinoh either for a baby shower gift or in the hospital when the sore nipples began.
